Project Summary

Think about your grandparents. They are probably still driving. They drive to pick up groceries, get to appointments, visit you, and socialize. Getting around conveniently and on their own schedules is important to them. But the time will come when health or other concerns will make driving unsafe or impossible. Many baby boomers are already in this difficult position, and more seniors are joining them every day. However, some continue to drive because they lack accessible alternatives. Public transit is not available everywhere and often includes long walks to access points, and taxis are expensive and not always immediately available when needed. Rideshare programs like Uber and Lyft offer more options, with cars available “at will” to pick customers up and deliver them exactly where they want to go. Unfortunately, many seniors do not have smartphones to access these rideshare apps. Getting a smart phone with data is expensive and may be too complicated for members of this population. This project aims to find alternative ways for seniors to access rideshare services. Team members are encouraged to explore creative solutions such as voice activation, opportunities for relatives to “gift” service, advance scheduling, preferred driver requests, media campaigns, and other ideas. The team should also consider the unique barriers and needs faced by seniors, including accessibility, safety, and security concerns. Students might be interested in technology and design, communications, marketing, digital media, transportation, community support and engagement, social sciences, and aging populations.

Teens Learn to Drive is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives and preventing injuries from car crashes. We provide many different services, such as interactive events, newsletters, outreach projects, and campaigns to raise awareness about safe driving. We work with populations identified as at a high risk of experiencing driving accidents, including teens and young adults, newcomers to Canada, and senior drivers. Our goal is to reinforce good driving habits for all drivers and change driving culture for our teens and young adults.

There is an Uber kiosk at Pearson Airport that does not require a cell phone. That technology might provide some insights: Learn more.
