Project 110

Challenge Question

How to create a beverage bottle collection program for large hospitality companies (restaurants, hotels, etc.) to donate bottles and deposits are donated to a charity?

Partner: CleanRiver Recycling Solutions

Project Summary

Currently, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality organizations in Ontario go through tons of wine, beer and other liquor bottles. These bottles are usually sent straight to landfills despite the fact that each bottle can be deposited at the Beer Store for a cash return. The goal of this project is to create a streamlined program for bottle and deposit collection that operates in partnership with restaurants and hotels in order to collect bottles and donate the returns to charities that can use the funds. The research team for this project will focus their attention on developing methods to service collection bins and conceptualizing ways to represent and market the service to restaurants and hotels while developing a collection structure that ensures that bins never get overfilled and that deposit proceeds are donated to charities regularly. The research team might be composed of individuals with an interest in waste management, environmental studies, urban studies, marketing and infrastructure design.

Organizational Profile

Currently, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality organizations go through tons of wine, beer and other liquor bottles. These bottles are usually sent straight to landfills. Each bottle can be deposited at the Beer Store for a cash return.

The proposal is to create a streamlined program for bottle and deposit collection, working in partnership with restaurants, hotels, etc. to collect and donate returns to charities that can use the funds. This would require focus on how to service these bins (CleanRiver can supply), how to represent the brand for these restaurants and hotels, ensuring bins never get overfilled and deposit process and donating to charities regularly.
