Challenge Question
How can we best support underrepresented groups transitioning from university into their careers?
Partner: TechConnex
Project Summary
While tech occupations in Canada tend to be more diverse than the labour market as a whole, the field still struggles with underrepresentation and pay inequality. Visible minorities make up 31.9% of Canada’s tech workers and earn on average $3100 less than other workers, and women occupy only 20% of the tech workforce and earn $7300 less than their male counterparts. Women who are visible minorities experience even starker disparities. This project aims to explore ways to support underrepresented groups as they transition from university to the work force. Team members will devise tools, resources, and initiatives to engage with students and recent graduates looking for networking, mentorship, and other forms of support as they enter their new careers and a new phase of their lives. Students interested in this project may have skills in web design, digital communication, human resources, and the social sciences. Some team members should have backgrounds in technology-based fields, but students from other disciplines are also welcome, particularly those with interest or knowledge in issues relating to discrimination, equality, and accessibility.
