Challenge Question
What tools are necessary to promote existing/new online socio-emotional youth programming in the hopes of reaching a wider audience and how can we implement them?
Partner: Moorelands Kids
Project Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that Moorelands Kids has had to switch gears to offer online programs for the first time ever. While there have been many challenges (especially around the accessibility of online programming for low-income families), our virtual programs have brought about new opportunities and revealed new avenues for communicating and supporting children. For example, our online camp, Moorelands Camp Lead-On, has provided participants with significant opportunities for learning about a range of issues and problem-solving skills through its online camp skits and interactive games. Programs that would have previously only been available physically at the camp now have the potential to be accessed by children wherever they are in the world. The goal of this project is to help Moorelands Kids find and implement the necessary tools to promote their youth programming in order to reach in-need youth and provide them with the skills they need to succeed. The research team will focus on improving and expanding Moorelands Kids’ online presence, in terms of both creating/improving actual programming and expanding the promotion and accessibility of their programs. Interested students might have backgrounds in youth and community engagement, human resources, the social sciences, and web design. They might also be interested in issues related to marginalized communities and access to resources, and they should have excellent organization and communication skills.

Organizational Profile
Moorelands Kids is an innovative charity working to empower children from low-income Toronto neighbourhoods to transform their lives. We believe that every child has strengths, regardless of their life circumstances, but children from low-income families face opportunity gaps and other barriers to success. For the children we work with, poverty is much more than just financial, impacting self-esteem, social interactions, relationships, and mental and physical health. Our recreation-based leadership programs use our unique and proven Moorelands Kids’ Habits & Qualities, an approach rooted in positive youth development and the latest advances in childhood education. We provide programs for both summer camps and after-school settings to offer year-round experiences where children can learn, practice, and benefit from valuable life and leadership skills. We set the stage for children as young as six to become leaders—first for themselves and then in their communities—so that they are equipped with the tools they need to succeed and live positive, healthy lives.
