Job description

Under the supervision of Dr. Orbinski, the global health research assistant (RAY program, 6 hours per week) will:

  • Help catalogue books, organize a bibliography, and collect global health academic literature of the past 3 years to focus on a new book with chapters on global health, planetary health, and international relations.
  • Create and maintain a digital research repository to be accessed by Dahdaleh Institute (DI) fellows, students, and researchers.
  • Design and deliver training and support programs (e.g., workshops and sessions) on various emergent technologies and research dissemination products.
  • Prepare meeting agendas and supporting documents, take minutes, record actionable items, and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Act as a representative of the DI at events as assigned.
  • Attend and actively participate in a weekly transdisciplinary seminar series and write up content and other notes for knowledge dissemination.
  • Provide event support, including administrative and logistical support for research projects.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Specific research activities the student(s) will be engaged in:
  • Gathering data from international government agencies and research organizations
  • Compiling and cleaning quantitative and qualitative data in Excel, Word, and other software
  • Creating and maintaining a structured and annotated bibliographic review of existing literature, organizing resources, projects, and individuals
  • Managing sources using reference management software
  • Participating in literature reviews and in writing and editing manuscripts summarizing research

  • Preparing presentations and written outputs of research; editing and formatting drafts; corresponding with partners and workshop invitees
  • Professional communication, including international and cross-cultural professional interaction and communication
Type of training and support that will be provided to the student(s) in carrying out these research activities:
  • Methodological training in data analysis
  • Subject matter training in global health
  • Regular status meetings with your supervising full-time faculty member

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate York student. Applicants from diverse programs of study are encouraged.   • Demonstrated interest in global health.
  • Demonstrated skills, experience, and familiarity with conducting literature reviews.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research methods (quantitative and/or qualitative and/or integrative).
  • Excellent analytical skills for understanding, sorting, and categorizing complex information. Skills and resourcefulness in drawing mind-maps and tabulating information is an asset.
  • Demonstrated note-taking, journal-keeping, and filing skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, professional correspondence, and public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Excellent computer skills (word processing, email, database, spreadsheets, forms, and slides; facility with Office 365 Apps). WordPress editing skills are an asset. Social media communication skills are an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including international and cross-cultural communication. Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with researchers, students, and staff.
  • Eagerness to learn, support, and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
