Research Fellow
Raphael Aguiar is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research, earning his PhD in Health Policy and Equity from York University.
With over a decade of experience in Africa, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, Raphael worked in international development as a project manager for the international NGO Humanity and Inclusion (formerly Handicap International). There, he led projects in both humanitarian and developmental settings, advancing rights-based and fields-based approaches through the development of primary healthcare services, advocacy for the adoption of National Policies and International Conventions, and implementation of national action plans.
In the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Raphael led units and teams focused on knowledge and information management pertaining to serious crimes, human rights abuses, and administrative challenges. In the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordination Office in Cameroon, he worked on the development of crisis risk management initiatives.
He is currently engaged in projects supported by the Public Health Agency of Canada-Infectious Disease and Climate Change Fund and SSHRC-New Frontiers in Research Fund, focusing respectively on the development of a One Health governance system addressing infectious diseases and climate change and on jointly analysing governance of emerging global health threats (infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food insecurity, and climate change).
Additional research interests: global health governance, global health programs and interventions, urban political ecology, urbanization, climate crisis, One Health, environmental stewardship.
