Dahdaleh Faculty Speak at "Human Rights, the Sustainable Development Goals & the Law: International Legal Symposium"

Organized by a large partnership of organizations, including the University of Cambridge, McGill University, Canada’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the University of Costa Rica Law Faculty, the one-day symposium considered new policies and laws for post-pandemic recovery which can advance the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 2020 Online International Symposium on Human Rights, the SDGs & the Law convened leading experts in human rights, the SDGs and related fields with emerging scholars to chart a way forward that bridges the gaps in research and practice. Approximately 1300 people registered to attend.

Dr. Idil Boran, who leads the Dahdaleh Institute's Synergies of Planetary Health Research Initiative spoke at Session III: Designing Post-Pandemic Rights-Based Approaches to Paris Agreement Implementation - SDGs 7 & 13. She added a Planetary Health perspective to a conversation which also covered One Health and systems approaches. Over 300 people attended the session.

In a simultaneous session, Dahdaleh Distinguished Chair Steven Hoffman spoke at Session IV: Devising Post-Pandemic Rights-Based Approaches to Global Health & Gender - SDGs 3 & 5.

Other notable speakers included Hon. Minister David Lametti, Minister of Justice, Government of Canada; Dr. Elizabeth Mrema, Acting Executive-Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity and Director of Environmental Law, United Nations Environment Programme; Hon Justice Prof Marcel Szabo, Judge, Constitutional Court of Hungary and former Ombudsman for Future Generations; and Rt Hon. Chief Justice Richard Wagner, PC, Supreme Court of Canada; among others.

The symposium took place Friday, 15 May 2020, 9:00am - 6:30pm.

Co-hosted by the McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism and the Centre International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL), in partnership with the University of Cambridge, University of Montreal Law Faculty, the University of Waterloo School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED), the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA), the University of Chile Law Faculty, the University of Costa Rica Law Faculty, the International Law Association of Canada, the McGill Journal of Sustainable Development Law (MJSDL), Canada's Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
