Admission Requirements

Preparing your application to graduate studies at York University and/or other interested universities requires research and planning. Some students start preparing their plan for graduate studies as early as two years before they submit their application. Consider the following information below to help guide you through a successful application process.

Note: Now accepting applications for the new Master of Athletic Therapy (MAT) program starting Spring 2027. We encourage you to submit your completed application by November 1st.

To be considered for admission to MA, MSC or MFSc degree, the applicant must:

  • have a strong academic background relevant to the area of study to be pursued at the Masters level
  • have completed an honours undergraduate degree at a recognized university, with a B+ grade point average (or higher) in the last two years of full-time study, before starting the program (ie. must complete undergraduate degree before starting graduate degree).
  1. Applicants must have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree (equivalent to 120 credits) from an accredited Canadian college or university or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 3.25 (based on 4.00 scale, equivalent to a B+ grade point average) in the final 60 credit hours (or equivalent) based on complete transcripts submitted. A bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and/or Health Sciences is recommended but not required. Each of the prerequisite courses listed also require a minimum grade of B+ (if the applicant has < B+, an alternative pathway from the normal standards may be applied). The completed four-year baccalaureate degree will not be required at the time of application but will be required to start the program as a matriculating student.
  2. The following are a list of required pre-requisite courses:
    • Minimum of 3 credit hours or equivalent of anatomy or applied anatomy
    • Minimum of 3 credit hours or equivalent of human physiology or exercise physiology
    • 3 credit hours or equivalent of sports injury
    • 3 credit hours or equivalent of applied kinesiology, biomechanics, or equivalent
    • 3 credit hours of nutrition or equivalent
  3. In addition to course prerequisites, the student must hold a First Responder certification through an authorized body such as the Canadian Red Cross. The certification will not be required at application but will be required to start the program as a matriculating student.
  4. Personal statement letter citing experiences, interest and commitment to health equity and diversity. (maximum 750 words).
  5. In addition, two letters of recommendation are required: one from a professor/professional such as a certified athletic therapist or sport physical therapist; second letter from any individual (that is not a member of the family or a family friend) that can attest to the applicant’s attributes such as professionalism, critical thinking, leadership, communication, collaboration, health advocate, coaching/teaching, and empathy. If a student has difficulty with this aspect, they will be able to contact the program to discuss.

To be considered for admission to the PhD degree, the applicant must have:

  • Be a master's degree graduate of a recognized university, with at least a A- grade point average in the last two years of full-time study, or with qualifications accepted as equivalent by the Senate Committee on Admissions
  • Completed courses equivalent to those required for the current Master's thesis degree in Kinesiology and Health Science at York University
  • Be assessed as suitable for PhD level study by the Kinesiology and Health Science Graduate Executive Committee. The latter decision shall be based on such evidence as letters of reference, the applicant’s written statement and the applicant’s research and academic record
