Mitacs Accelerate Internship
Available to community organizations and York University researchers.
Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that designs and delivers research and training programs to support industrial and social innovation in Canada. Over the last 20 years, their various programs (such as Accelerate, Elevate, and Globalink) have helped organizations solve their research challenges with academic expertise and allowed universities to leverage additional funding.
York University’s partnership with Mitacs enables us to leverage (1:1) matching funds on a financial contribution of $7,500 from our partner organizations, to make available $15,000 for a graduate (Masters or PhD level) student to participate in an Accelerate Internship to work on a research project for roughly four to six months. A representative from the partner organization works with academic researchers at York University to develop a customized research project proposal for Mitacs. Partner organizations can be either for-profit corporations and/or not-for-profit corporations in Canada. Applications are accepted by Mitacs on a rolling basis and it roughly takes six to eight weeks for review/approval. York University has a 94% success rate with their Mitacs proposals.
Once approved, a graduate student is assigned to carry out the research project with oversight from a supervising academic at York and an on-site research supervisor within the partner organization. Depending on the project needs, students can spend their entire internships onsite with the partner organization or split their time to be partially on-campus at York and partially onsite with the partner organization. Upon completion, graduate students are required to submit a final report and exit survey summarizing project results and experiences.
