Our first Tubman Talks of the academic year will be taking place this Thursday October 6th (virtually)! Tubman's Visiting Scholar Tii Nchofoung will be presenting his research titled "Natural Resources, Renewable Energy, and Governance: A path towards sustainable development in Africa.

Abstract: The transition to renewable energy sources is essential for decarbonization, climate change mitigation and fostering sustainable development. This paper examines the effect of natural resources on renewable energy development and the modulating effect of governance. The study is based on data for 48 African countries for the period 2000-2020. Our findings, based on the generalised method of moments (MM) estimator, indicate that natural resources enhance renewable energy development in Africa, and the results are robust across alternative specifications of natural resources and governance. When robustness is checked through quantile regression, the results show that the positive effect depends on the conditional distribution of natural resources and the type of natural resource under consideration. Results for the indirect effect show that governance interacts with natural resource rents to generate positive synergy effects across different governance specifications and natural resources, except for coal rents.
