Have you heard of the growth mindset? It is the belief that skills and abilities are not fixed but can be developed and improved with effort and hard work. Many great athletes, successful entrepreneurs and influential figures have had a growth mindset – and you can too!

In this workshop, incoming students will be introduced to mindset theory, the brain and its capacity for change, and strategies that can help them develop a stronger brain. They will be equipped with the skills to create effective, growth-oriented goals, as well as the knowledge, resources, and affirmations to follow through! Finally, they will learn how to cultivate a growth mindset, and understand that they are in fact, capable of more than they might think!

Facilitator: Julie Hard (she/her)

Through global experiential learning, students strengthen their global citizenship. In this session, students will learn about opportunities to gain international experience as part of their academic journey. Students can earn credits towards their degree while engaging in international programs and research through York’s academic exchanges, summer programs, and global internships. Hear about the Eco-Campus in Costa Rica and the other international partner programs while also learning about the resources that can be accessed to help students get there. Scholarships and awards are available to help students offset the costs of travel while the Global Learning Team assist in preparing the way. Your time at York is an academic journey, come and learn where it can take you.

When failure happens and you start to doubt yourself, how do you cope? Students who are transitioning from high school to university may carry with them beliefs and negatives views towards failure. While failing can cause uncomfortable feelings such as disappointment and helplessness, it also is an opportunity for learning and self-growth. In this workshop students will have the opportunity to normalize failure and learn to cope with the feelings that arise during difficult times.
Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their past failures and think about how they managed the situation, what worked and what didn’t. We hope to put emphasis on the idea that learning is a process with many ups and downs, and through failure we can find success. By the end of the session students can have a more positive outlook on failure and have the tools to combat self-doubt during their academic journey.

University life is busy, and students are often faced with competing priorities. Without a clear study plan many students end up procrastinating, cramming, staying up late, drinking caffeine before bed, and trying to complete too many tasks at once. This doesn’t have to be you! This workshop will introduce students to three study techniques that will promote academic and personal well-being.

Students will be introduced to the brain’s unconscious assistant (your own personal assistant) to better understand the myths of multitasking, how the Pomodoro technique can help you manage your time and the importance of sleep. Students will walk away from this session knowing how to study smarter, not harder. Throughout this interactive workshop, students will have an opportunity to reflect on their study habits and daily activities and create a schedule that will incorporate the strategies introduced.

Whether we realize it or not, many of us tend to live our lives from within our own frame of mind without giving much thought to the viewpoints of others. However, when we take the time to look at issues and ideas from other perspectives, we open ourselves up to exploring new creative thoughts and ideas.

We can help ourselves come up with new answers by changing our perspective and solve challenges that previously appeared insurmountable.
So how do we look at things in other ways?

In this workshop, you will:

  • Explore your individual values
  • Connect with the communication process
  • Practice thinking of ideas from other perspectives

Please join us in a journey to rediscover the pathways to seeing things from multiple perspectives, views, and mindsets.
