Become a HELM Peer Mentor
Support your peers. Build leadership skills. Make a difference.
The Health Engaged Learning and Mentorship (HELM) Program supports Faculty of Health students on academic probation through self-paced modules, academic advising, and peer mentorship—that’s where you come in.
As a HELM Peer Mentor, you’ll act as a guide and support system for students who are rebuilding their academic confidence. You’ll check in regularly, offer encouragement, share strategies, and help mentees complete the program.
Why Become a HELM Peer Mentor
- Make a meaningful impact on a student’s academic journey
- Gain experience in leadership, communication, and peer support
- Build your resume and receive official recognition for your contributions
- Learn how to support others while growing personally and professionally
Objectives

Eligibility
To apply, you must:
- Be a current Faculty of Health student at York University
- Be in good academic standing
- Ideally be in second year or above
- Have an interest in mentoring, supporting others, and promoting student success
No prior mentoring experience is required—we’ll train you!

Time Commitment
Approximately 1–3 hours per week
Weekly check-ins with your mentee
Brief weekly logs to document interactions
Flexible scheduling based on your availability

Training & Expectations
All mentors are required to attend mandatory training before beginning. Throughout the semester, you’ll have access to resources, guidance, and a mentor community.
You are not expected to be an expert—your role is to listen, encourage, and refer your mentees to resources when needed. You are not a tutor, therapist, or advisor.

Mentor Community & Recognition
As part of the HELM mentoring team, you'll join a community of committed student leaders. Mentors often form connections, build confidence, and learn from each other throughout the term.
You’ll also receive a Certificate of Appreciation and may be nominated for student leadership awards at Calumet and Stong Colleges.
