Job description
Under the supervision of Dr. Orbinski, the research dissemination and design assistant (RAY program, 6 hours per week) will:
- Assist with all planning, editing and production stages for a new annual research publication by the Dahdaleh Institute
- Solicit, curate, and edit content and images
- Design attractive online and print layouts
- Conduct interviews and collect data
- Support authors
- Attend, actively participate in, and keep detailed notes from editorial meetings
Specific research activities the student(s) will be engaged in:
- Creating and maintaining a production schedule
- Writing and editing copy
- Interviewing contributors
- Gathering data from Institute researchers and staff
- Designing infographics
- Sourcing images and photographing researchers
- Researching print and online publication options
- Design and layout
- Attending and participating in meetings
- Keeping clear records of publication processes and decisions
Type of research experience the student(s) will receive:
- Critical thinking
- Knowledge mobilization
- Academic editing of drafts including substantive, stylistic, and copy editing
- Formatting and layout of print and online research material
- Conducting interviews and collecting data
- Data visualization and corresponding software
- Correspondence with researchers.
- Professional communication, including international and cross-cultural professional interaction and communication
- Project management throughout publication cycle
Type of training and support that will be provided to the student(s) in carrying out these research activities:
- Supervision and support from professional academic editor
- Subject matter training in global health and research dissemination
- Regular status meetings with your supervisor and your supporting full-time faculty
Qualifications
- Current undergraduate York student. Applicants from diverse programs of study are encouraged. - Excellent writing and communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills for managing complex timelines and multiple conflicting demands
- Excellent judgment and tact
- Excellent computer skills (design software; Word, including revision tools; email; and task management). Web design, graphic design, and social media communication skills are an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including international and cross-cultural communication. Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with researchers, students, and staff.
- An eagerness to learn, support, and take on initiative
- An interest in global health, research communications, design, and publishing/editing
