We are pleased to formally announce the initiation of a new partnership development grant funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), under the leadership of Dr. Amrita Daftary of the School of Global Health, Faculty of Health. This project, entitled "Developing a Global Framework to Address Gender-Based Violence in Women Affected by Tuberculosis (TB)," has been allocated a budget of $200,000 plus equivalent partner contributions to investigate a critical and underexplored issue situated at the nexus of health, gender, and social justice. Civil society / community partners TB Proof (South Africa), Perhimpunan Organisasi Pasien (POP) TB (Indonesia), and TB Europe Coalition (Ukraine), located in three high-burden nations, will be at the helm. Other investigators include Dr. Charity Oga-Omenka (University of Waterloo), Dr. Ahmad Fuady (Universitas Indonesia), Dr. Jeremiah Chikovore (Human Sciences Research Council, South Africa), Dr. Nora Engel (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), and Dr. Carmen Logie (University of Toronto).
The study will explore experiences of gender-based violence (GBV) among women impacted by TB, and emerging responses, in settings characterized by distinct sociopolitical and cultural contexts that influence both disease prevalence and gender disparities. Although substantial literature has established links between GBV and infectious diseases like HIV and COVID-19, the intersectionality between TB and GBV remains insufficiently examined. The multidisciplinary team endeavors to bridge this knowledge gap and establish a foundation for policy and programmatic interventions rooted in community-derived insights. By centering the lived experiences of women affected by TB and GBV, a nuanced, evidence-based, and locally developed global framework may be envisioned.
The team anticipates sharing updates as the project progresses toward data collection and analysis phases in the forthcoming months.
