The admissions process for the MPPAL program at York is competitive. To be considered for admission, candidates must have either:

  • Completed an Honours Bachelors degree (or its equivalent) from a recognized University with a minimum grade point average of B+ in the final two years and a minimum of five years work experience in a relevant public sector management, administrative, or supervisory position.

OR

  • Completed an Honours Bachelors degree (or its equivalent) from a recognized University with a minimum grade point average of A in the final two years. Under this category, students may have completed less than five years of work experience in a relevant public sector management, administrative, or supervisory position.

Preference will be given to students who have completed an Honours Bachelors degree in Public Administration or Political Science with an emphasis on public administration and who have at least five years of work experience.

At the discretion of the selection committee, in exceptional circumstances, students who have completed a three-year Bachelors degree with a minimum grade point average of B+ and have significant work experience in terms of time frame and/or quality of experience (specifically more than five years work experience in a relevant public sector management, administrative, or supervisory position) may be recommended for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Note: Applicants for our new full-time stream must have acquired some work experience in the public sector already, otherwise they will not be considered for admission.

Note also: Although it is not a prerequisite, students are advised that they may find it helpful to have completed a university-level two-term introductory course covering both microeconomics and macroeconomics (ECON 1000/1010 or equivalent) prior to enrolling in the MPPAL.

Applicants must submit:

  • a CV or resumé
  •  a writing sample
  • a statement of interest outlining their experience, background, and fit
  • a Supplemental Information Form (SIF) and
  • three reference letters.

Ideally, one reference should be from a supervisor or former supervisor, or a co-worker. Another should be from an academic (i.e. a current or former professor). If you are unable to obtain an academic reference, please contact the MPPAL program office for advice (416-736-2100 ext 77528). We reserve the right to contact your references for confirmation.

Please use the Graduate Admission Package Checklist to ensure that your application is complete.

Students who are eligible for the MPPAL will also be eligible to complete the Graduate Diploma in Justice System Administration.
