Vision science program seeks cues to 'up' and 'down' Psychology Professor Laurence Harris and a team of researchers from York’s Centre for Vision Research are studying ways to combat the disorientation often experienced by astronauts in zero-gravity environments — both inside and outside space craft. One inventive research tool is called the "sideways room" — an 8-foot cube resembling a typical room except that it can be rotated around a stationary subject or a subject can be rotated within the stationary room. By manipulating various visual and gravitational cues, students will be able to quantify subjects' perceptions of their own orientation. The knowledge gained from the “sideways room” also has possible engineering, medical and human factors design applications.
