How to Apply

Top-ranked applicants at the Masters level will be considered for entrance scholarships ranging from $6,000 to $8,000. Top-ranked applicants at the Doctoral level will be considered for $3,000 or $10,000 entrance scholarships.

Application Procedures

  • All applicants must complete the Graduate Admissions Application Package available at York University—Graduate Admissions.
  • All applicants must complete the Supplementary Information and Recommendation (reference) forms accessed through MyFile.

Applications to the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology must be completed online. Click on the Apply Online to York button to review the admission requirements and deadlines for this program.

  • Identify your own interests within the discipline of anthropology
  • Research MA or PhD programs online
  • Identify thematic areas and individual faculty members in your area of interest at different schools
  • Take note of application requirements, fees, and deadlines
  • Create a list of deadlines and requirements
  • Transcripts
  • Resume
  • Statement of Interest
  • Reference letters from two or three professors  Writing sample
  • Clearly written
  • Not too long
  • Can include background details but not your life story
  • Should involve reference to current anthropology
  • Need not propose a specific research project but must describe your topical and theoretical interests
  • Show how your interests align with faculty expertise
  • Should be from professors who know you fairly well
  • Get to know those profs now
  • Approach them formally with an email or after class; request to meet in person at their convenience
  • Ask them what they need from you to write the most informed and supportive letter possible
  • Provide them with a complete package well before the deadline

  • Excellent grades
  • A strong statement of interest
  • Strong letters of reference
  • Your research interests align with faculty expertise and course offerings available at York
