On Wednesday, January 29, Dahdaleh senior fellow Don Simpson led an engaging and reflective conversation on preparing for one’s real life’s work. Moderated by Dahdaleh senior fellow Harvey Skinner, the session was a back-and-forth discussion, blending storytelling with thought provoking questions about leadership, optimism and personal growth.
Simpson emphasized the importance of maintaining a spirit of “informed optimism” during challenging times. He recalled a challenge from former Dahdaleh director, Dr. James Orbinski, urging attendees to become better storytellers as storytelling is essential for conveying research and inspiring change. He shared insights into how personal narratives shape identity, purpose and influence, stressing that effective storytelling can drive meaningful action.
Throughout the discussion, Simpson recounted his own journey as an “explorer,” embracing curiosity and challenges rather than following a predetermined path. He encouraged attendees to reflect on their personal myths, which are the stories they tell themselves about who they are and who they aspire to be. He highlighted the need for a “why not” mindset, pushing individuals to embrace opportunities even when they seem uncertain or unconventional.

Simpson urged participants to actively seek out mentors and trusted sources of knowledge, ensuring they are well equipped to navigate an unpredictable world. Addressing the complexities of leadership, Simpson underscored the necessity of collaboration, diversity and inclusivity. He noted that in today’s fast-changing, knowledge driven global economy, leadership is no longer just about technical skills but also about relationship building, adaptability and a deep personal philosophy. The session concluded with Simpson reflecting on his lifelong learning and networking experiences, encouraging attendees to embrace their unique paths with courage, curiosity and a commitment to service.
