Researcher Linn Biorklund Belliveau, PhD(c) visited Mexico City the week of October 7, where she met with migration experts including Dr. Edgar Corzo Sosa, Professor in Law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and his research team. Corzo Sosa currently serves on Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission in charge of migrant programs, offences against journalists and human rights defenders, and human trafficking.
They met to discuss transit migration, migrant health, and the growing impact of environmental change in Mexico and beyond. As a result of these discussions, representatives of the current National Human Rights Commission, of UNAM and of the Dahdaleh Institute are committed to finding ways to collaborate around these common concerns.
During her visit, Biorklund Belliveau also visited Casa Tochan and CAFEMIN, two migrant shelters providing legal assistance, health care, and temporary protection for people that are either awaiting asylum, are in transit, or who have recently been forcibly returned from the United States.
