Faculty Fellow
James Elder is professor and York Research Chair in Human and Computer Vision at York University, Toronto, Canada. He is jointly appointed to the Department of Psychology and the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at York and is a member of York’s Centre for Vision Research (CVR) and Vision: Science to Applications (VISTA) program. His research employs psychophysical and computational methods to understand the principles that underly both biological and machine vision systems. Dr. Elder’s current research is focused on natural scene statistics, perceptual organization, contour processing, shape perception, single-view 3D reconstruction, ecological statistics, attentive vision systems and machine vision systems for dynamic 3D urban awareness.
Over his career, Dr. Elder has spearheaded and led numerous successful collaborative research projects with funding from federal, provincial and industry sources totalling more than $13M. Dr. Elder currently leads the $4M ORF-RE project Intelligent Systems for Sustainable Urban Mobility and from 2015-2021 led the $1.65M NSERC CREATE Training Program in Data Analytics & Visualization. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers in leading international journals and conferences in both computer and biological vision, holds three patents on attentive vision technologies and is the co-founder of the AI start-up AttentiveVision.
Dr. Elder’s research has won a number of awards and honours, including the Premier’s Research Excellence Award. He is appointed to the editorial boards of three major international journals.
