The South Simcoe Green Economy Transition Centre officially launched Mar. 26 in Bond Head, ON. The centre will include up-to-date virtual databases on best practices for reducing energy costs, education and training opportunities through online programs and videoconferencing, and access to government grants. York University announced its involvement, along with partner organizations Nottawasaga Futures and the South Simcoe Economic Alliance, on Feb.8.
Several York students are also taking active roles in research projects related to the centre.
“It is exactly what is needed in virtually every community across Canada,” MPP Donna Cansfield, the honourary patron for the World Green Building Council and a parliamentary assistant in the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, told the Innisfil Scope in their coverage of the launch. “It’s where you’re going to assimilate and distribute information, gather best practices, allow people to look at their ecological footprint, do carbon deduction, and pulling in the community to give them the tools to have a better life. Not a bad idea, when you think about it.”
The project also received coverage on Simcoe.com and by the Bradford West Gwillimbury Times.
