Science, Pseudo-Science and Anti-Science
Speaker: Dr. James E. Alcock, Professor Emeritus, Psychology (Glendon)
Date: Friday, November 7, 2025.
Time: 1:00 to 2:30 pm, following the ARFL AGM
Dr. Alcock is a renowned social psychologist and defender of reason and evidence in science and everyday life. His work on the false claims of parapsychology is widely known and earned him In Praise of Reason award from the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. Given the current proliferation of medical misinformation, his recent book, Belief: What it means to Believe and Why our Convictions are so Compelling (2018) has taken on added importance. As one of the world’s leading skeptics, a group that challenges superstition and questionable science, he is well equipped to help us confront the erroneous beliefs that seem increasingly to surround us. For those who believe that seeing is believing, it is worth noting that Dr. Alcock is an amateur magician. In his spare time, he is also a member of the ARFL Executive Committee.
The event will take place via Zoom. The Zoom link will be circulated by e-mail to YURA members.
PRESENTED BY ARFL, THE ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED FACULTY & LIBRARIANS AT YORK UNIVERSITY.
YURA members, family and friends have been invited to attend this talk, which will follow ARFL's Annual General Meeting.
