We know that preparing students for life after high school is a monumental task. As part of our goal to make sure that every student has an opportunity to explore post-secondary education as potential pathway, we provide the following supports for secondary schools in the community.

Workshops

If you are a teacher working within the Black Creek /Jane Finch Community and looking for student resources, we are happy to provide the following workshops and programs to support your students along their journey to considering their pathways after high school. We working with you to deliver tailored workshops for student success in post-secondary education. Here are some we typically offer:

Myths and Misconceptions about College and University

During this workshop, we delve into students' personal worries or concerns, breaking down stigmas and pre-conceived notions about the University/College experience and providing them with answers and resources.

What To Do After Applying

Students also need support after the application process. In this workshop, students are shown ways to prepare for University/College and what steps they need to take, such as keeping track of pre-requisites, financial and scholarship options, and tips for success.

OSAP and Financing Post-Secondary

In this workshop, we provide students with information and resources that would help them understand how they can make their post-secondary goals attainable through OSAP and other financial options, such as academic or private scholarships.

Scholarship Writing 101

This workshop specifically focuses on providing students with the knowledge and skill set for applying/writing scholarship application. This is a hands-on workshop where students learn where to look for scholarships and how to write statements for success.

Tips for Post-Secondary Success

In this workshop, the CEC provides students with tips and support on how to be successful and gives them a glimpse into what the university experience is like in their first year. Students are encouraged to actively participate and ask questions that would help in building their confidence as they approach the start of their post-secondary education.

Events

Take Our Kids to Work Day

The CEC works closely with community partners and York U to make a unique day for grade 9 students who may not have other options to participate in this experience. Take Our Kids to Work Day joins the morning pre-planned York events including tours, talks, and pizza. In the afternoon our group gathers for various workshops and speakers who inspire and broaden ideas of “what I want to do when I grow up”. It also introduces students early on to the assets of York University in their own back yard.

Walk With Excellence

The annual Walk With Excellence is a rite-of-passage event that celebrates the commitment, hard work, and strength that students demonstrated to reach his milestone. During the event, students from 5 high schools in the area will parade to York University, together with faculty and community members, and participate in a showcase of the pride, talents, and accomplishments of the students as they move forward to the next chapter in their lives.
