Overview
Paula Yolanda Gowdie, a Black woman with African ancestry, completed her graduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at York University as a part-time student. During this time, she was confronted with the lack of resources and services, including scholarships and awards, available to part-time graduate students, and particularly for Black graduate students. To help with addressing this issue, Paula established The Redeemer Award for Black Graduate (Masters) Part-Time Scholars with the intent to specifically support Black Caribbean women part-time scholars enrolled in a research-based Masters graduate program whose research focuses on human rights, women’s studies and/or social issues that examines the lives and experiences of Black women of African descent in Canada and around the world. This award has been established by Paula Yolanda Gowdie as a declaration of promise, success, intention, gratitude, and thanksgiving. The purpose of this award is to elevate the stories and voices of Black women and to specifically support Black part-time scholars enrolled in a research-based Masters graduate program.
