The Department of Communication Studies is one of the most popular departments at York University and is ranked as one of the top 6 in Canada according to the global standards of the QS World University Ranking system.
Our approach to communication emphasizes the questioning and analyzing of media and technology in their relationship to social and cultural practices, and the circulation of ideas and values.
Our students become critical, independent and creative thinkers able to engage with the various dimensions and complexities of communication, whether this involves creating or evaluating media content and information technologies, or addressing significant issues arising out of their production and use.
Our program features the ability to diversify your education by combining your Communication Studies degree with another major or minor program or going on an international exchange.
In fourth year, you will have the opportunity to gain experience in the workplace through our Field Experience Course. In this unique course, you will spend approximately one-third of the time in the classroom while the rest of the time you will gain valuable experience working in individual placements throughout the GTA.

The Department of Communication Studies offers you an interdisciplinary and dynamic milieu to develop comprehensive and critical awareness of diverse communication and media environments. Our approach to communication emphasizes the questioning and analyzing of media and technology in their relationship to social and cultural practices and the circulation of ideas and values.
Our goal is to help students develop knowledge and critical understanding of the central concepts, theories and methods of the field, as well as the ability to think critically and analytically through the use and application of a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to a variety of communication phenomena.
Our primary offering gives students breadth and depth of knowledge in communication studies.
