Highlights 2022 - 2023

The 2022-2023 academic year brought forth many exciting opportunities and strong engagement from government officials from all levels of government and parties.

Minister Helena Jaczek visits YSpace to speak with entrepreneurs

In October 2022, York University had the pleasure of providing Minister of Public Services and Procurement Helena Jaczek with a tour of YSpace. YSpace is York University’s pan-university entrepreneurship hub which aims at supporting young entrepreneurs starting their journey.

Several companies affiliated with YSpace were invited to speak with Minister Jaczek and explain how YSpace supported their companies and help them grow.

York University hosts Roundtable with local MPs

In November 2022, York University hosted a roundtable with local Members of Parliament to discuss York University’s important priorities.

MP Sgro, MP Jowhari, MP Chiang, MP Taylor Roy, MP Sorbara, MP Saks, and MP Ehsassi were provided with updates regarding construction progress and program development at our Markham campus and our proposed plans for a School of Medicine.

York University hosts Roundtable with local MPPs and Staff

In November 2022, York University hosted a roundtable with local Members of Provincial Parliament to discuss York University’s important priorities.

MPP Pang, MPP Gallagher Murphy, MPP Wai, MPP Kanapathi, and MPP Smith were provided with updates regarding construction progress and program development at our Markham campus and our proposed plans for a School of Medicine.

Minister Marci Ien visited York University to announce the ‘It’s Not Just’ youth campaign

In December 2022, York University had the honour of hosting, the federal Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien, who launched “It’s Not Just,” a national campaign to raise youth awareness about sexual and gender-based violence.

As part of the launch, the minister visited York University and met with the president and students. The minister’s visit to York preceded the University’s annual memorial ceremony on Dec. 6 to honour the 14 women who were murdered on the same date 33 years ago at École Polytechnique in Montreal.

Markham Campus Topping off Ceremony

In February 2023, York University hosted a topping-off ceremony for our upcoming Markham Campus. Attended by Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Minister of Colleges and Universities Jill Dunlop, government partners, business partners, and other significant contributors, the event marked a key milestone in the development of the Markham Campus.

This event also celebrated a 5-million dollar donation from York University Alum, Howard Sokolowski, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Metropia.

York University hosts the Hon. Kamal Khera, Minister of Seniors for a major funding announcement

In March 2023, York University and the York University Centre for Aging Research and Education (YU-CARE) hosted the Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Seniors and a YorkU Alumna, who announced $38.3M in funding towards a Brain Health research initiative that will support the complex care needs of older adults living with dementia & other cognitive impairments. The event was emceed by MP Francesco Sorbara.

Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh speaks with nursing students at York University

In March 2023 Jagmeet Singh, MP for Burnaby South and YorkU alumnus, guest lectured for the Social Justice and Advocacy for Nurses course at York University. MP Singh answered questions from nursing students regarding their concerns and hopes for the future.

MP Singh was also provided with updates regarding our proposed plans for a School of Medicine.
