Assistant Professor, Black Thriving and Education, Faculty of Education, York University


The Faculty of Education is one of the leading faculties of education in Canada with a particular focus on research with social impact. Through our research, scholarship and innovative programs we enact our mission of reinventing education for a diverse, complex world.

This opportunity is open to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent (for example Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe). Recognizing the underrepresentation of Black faculty, this opportunity is to support the University’s Affirmative Action program and has been developed based on the special program provisions of the Ontario Human Rights Code. The position is part of a cohort hire across a number of faculties and fields of study. The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant scholarly community at York, where we aspire to achieve equity and diversity in all areas, including race equity.

The Faculty of Education, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Black Thriving and Education at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023. The successful applicant will contribute fully and broadly to the Bachelor of Education and the Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies within the Faculty, as well as the Graduate Program including the Graduate Diploma in Urban Contexts. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD or a PhD by the start of the appointment in Education or a related field is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research in Black experiences in city and suburban education, which may include: research and policy perspectives on social exclusion in education; transformations in lives of Black children and youth in community, familial and institutional contexts; leadership in anti-Black racism and education, including curriculum, publicly engaged pedagogy, community-based collaboration; theory and practice of Black cultural production and creative arts across transnational diasporas.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and as appropriate, seek externally funded research at the highest level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; and/or scholarly productions; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as publicly engaged, experiential and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
