File Storage Options

  • Local disk
    • Storing files on local computer is not recommended as disk failure will result in loss of files/data.
  • OneDrive (Personal)
    • Recommended storage for all personal files.
    • OneDrive configuration - sync only folders with documents and exclude others if possible.
  • Teams, SharePoint
    • Recommended storage for all departmental and group collaboration files.
    • Please configure 2 or more owners of Teams/SharePoint to prevent loss of access due to a single owner leaving the organization.
  • Best Practices
    • Use of the OneDrive app is recommended for improved sync performance.
    • Encourage all users to use “-“ or “_” instead of space in file and folder names
    • Encourage all users to limit subfolders to 4 levels or less.
  • Potential issues
    • OneDrive app sync may not work when the file path length is very long (more than 255 characters).  This limit is often breached because of long folder and path names and number of subfolder depth.
    • Such files can only be accessed using the web client.
    • Very large files (50GB+) is not recommended for OneDrive/SharePoint as it can impact sync performance.
