Navigating Professional Development at York: A Guide for Graduate Students and Postdocs (Faculty of Graduate Studies)

York University offers a wide range of professional development resources to support graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in building skills for academic and non-academic careers. With so many options available, however, it can be difficult to identify which opportunities are most relevant to your personal goals and interests. This workshop will introduce participants to programs, services, and opportunities across campus in key areas from career development to teaching and research training. Whether you're planning your next steps or looking to enhance your current skill set, this session will help you make the most of your time at York and strategically prepare for your future.

Session Goals

  1. Introduce the range of programs, services, and resources available across campus for professional development.
  2. Help attendees identify opportunities that align with their academic and career goals.
  3. Support graduate students and postdocs in mapping out an individualized development plan.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify key professional development resources at York University, including those related to career planning, teaching, research, and transferable skills.
  • Assess which opportunities best align with their individual goals, interests, and career plans (academic or non-academic).
  • Develop a strategic approach to engaging with professional development offerings during their time at York.
  • Recognize the value of early and proactive engagement in professional development for long-term career success.
