Upcoming Workshop: Materiality, Evidence and Archive

Upcoming Workshop: Materiality, Evidence and Archive

We are pleased to announce that the Department of Anthropology will be hosting an online workshop on Materiality, Evidence and Archive on October 1st & 2nd, 2021. The workshop seeks to challenge and unsettle the established archival and evidentiary forms and practices concerning materiality, and to share new ways of thinking ethnographically about the relationship between permanence, stability, and objectification. It explores the relationships between materiality, evidence, and archive, and is particularly concerned with documents, objects, and other types of material things that are located outside of official archival sites, and how such materials are retained, transformed, or reconfigured to perform the labour of evidence.

Sponsored by York University's Department of Anthropology and Graduate Program in Social Anthropology, the workshop will include presentations by: Nayrouz Abu Hatoum (Concordia), Sana Aziz (Aligarh)  Amila Buturović (York), Jillian Fulton-Melanson (York), Zulfikar Hirji (York), Salman Hussain (York), Antonius Robben (Utrecht),  Shahla Talebi (Arizona State), Richard Vokes (Western Australia), and Daphne Winland (York).

Workshop details including participant bios, paper abstracts, and program information can be found on the workshop website. The workshop is open to all.

Please note that spaces are limited, so please register as soon as possible. Once you have registered you will be sent the Zoom link. If you have any questions about registration, please contact our workshop coordinator, Jillian Fulton at jsfulton@yorku.ca.
