OPIRG York is a student funded, student led activist hub on York University’s Keele campus. We work toward social and environmental justice, and support students to organize around campaigns that they are passionate about. Over the past 30 years, we have campaigned on many different issues including: fair trade, anti-imperialism, Indigenous sovereignty, food justice, economic justice and more.
Job Description:
ProPirganda Podcast Host
OPIRG York is looking for a student who is enthusiastic to start-up a new activist podcast series. In collaboration with the OPIRG York Board and staff, this Podcast Host placement student will conduct recorded interviews, select music, and edit audio files for the ProPirganda podcast.
Inspired by the OPIRG York ProPirganda community radio show, which ran from 2011-2016, this new podcast series sets out to share important political and social justice struggles and movement work. Focused on interviews with activists and grassroots organizations the Podcast Host will be responsible to engage with campus-based activism, as well as activism in North York and Toronto more broadly.
The podcast will be a collectively thought-through project with the Placement Student taking the lead on getting each step completed (i.e. publicizing it, arranging and conducting interviews, editing audio, etc). This placement student will be invited to attend Board of Director meetings, and organizational events as part of their placement experience.
Social Media Content Creator (TikTok)
OPIRG York is seeking support with our TikTok social media content.This Social Media placement student will condense complex information about social movements— both campus-based and in the broader community—into engaging, short videos. We began a new TikTok account with a placement student two years ago, and we are looking to continue with this medium of outreach and communication
Optional trainings will also be offered in Canva design, MailChimp newsletters, WordPress websites, consensus decision making, as well as organizational social media best practices. This placement student will be invited to attend Board of Director meetings, and organizational events as part of their placement experience.
Qualifications:
ProPirganda Podcast Host
- Passion for social justice issues
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a non-hierarchical collective
- Interest in consensus decision making and collective organizing structures
- Proficient in both oral and written communication
- Self-directed and professional in approach to the work assigned
- Demonstrated skill with audio mediums (i.e. music, radio, podcasting, etc)
Social Media Content Creator (TikTok)
- Passion for social justice issues
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a non-hierarchical collective
- Interest in consensus decision making and collective organizing structures
- Proficient in both oral and written communication
- Self-directed and professional in approach to the work assigned
- Demonstrated skill with video editing for social media
Additional Assets:
ProPirganda Podcast Host
- Knowledge of York University, Toronto, and/or global activist movements
- Experience with justice movements, or other activism experience
- Ability to conduct interviews and hold an engaging conversation
- Experience editing audio files (using open source programs)
- Knowledge of social justice themed music

- Ability to research and summarize research findings clearly
