Borealis Training Awards

The Borealis Council at the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies is inviting applications from York University upper undergraduate and graduate students involved in northern fieldwork.

This year, up to ten spots in an accredited Canadian Firearms Safety Course will be awarded to students who must obtain a Possession and Acquisition licence (PAL) in order to safely conduct fieldwork in the North.  The course may be taken as a group or individually with an accredited instructor.

Eligible students are full-time graduate or upper-level undergraduate students at York University. Preference will be given to graduate students of Borealis Council members.

In order to apply, students must submit the following to robarts@yorku.ca by April 28, 2023:

  1. Summary of their research project (150 words max)
  2. Details of planned fieldwork (dates, location, summary of physical fieldwork – 100 words max, and whether a PAL is mandatory)
  3. Benefits of a Canadian Firearms Safety Course for their research (100 words max)
  4. Support statement from the supervisor

Selection will be made within 30 days based on the following criteria: research training needs, remoteness of fieldwork, amount of time spent in the field and financial needs.
