BA, LLB, LLD (Hon)
Gregory Sorbara was re-appointed as York University's 13th Chancellor for a three‑year term commencing June 1, 2017.
An alumnus of York’s Glendon College (BA ’78) and Osgoode Hall Law School (LLB ’81), and a recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD ’13), Mr. Sorbara’s experiences of both campuses give him a unique perspective on the value of a liberal arts degree combined with a professional degree, as well as what it means to study at a bilingual university campus. Like many of our students, he continued his educational journey at York as a mature student. He has served in a number of leadership roles at York University, including as board member of the Alumni Association and as a member of the advisory council of the York Circle.
Mr. Sorbara has worked with the interests of the Greater Toronto Area at heart and has contributed substantially to its infrastructure and financial growth. He has championed postsecondary education as a catalyst for social and economic growth, as well as a driver of community building. His landmark second budget as Minister of Finance in 2005 featured the bold plan to invest significantly in increasing accessibility for low-income students while funding more enrollments and expanded faculty, graduate scholarships and research.
His passion for enhancing the lives of Ontarians is evident in his public service career, where he held numerous cabinet positions in the Ontario Legislature, including Minister of Finance, Minister of Colleges and Universities, Minister of Labour & Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, and as the Member representing Vaughan.
