- Purpose
- This Policy outlines the circumstances under which students who are ineligible, due to academic decisions, to proceed in their academic program at the end of a Fall/Winter session may continue in courses in the subsequent Summer session.
- This Policy also addresses the outcome for students who, at the end of the Summer session, achieve the required grade point average (GPA) to continue in their current program without interruption.
- Scope and Application
- This Policy applies to all undergraduate students.
- Definitions
- Academic Decision: An undergraduate student’s progression status in their program as determined by their final grades at the end of each academic session (e.g. Eligible to Proceed). Academic decisions appear on students’ grade report.
- Grade Point Average (GPA): The weighted average based on grades obtained in courses The GPA is assessed at the end of an academic session and cumulatively to degree completion.
- Session: A prescribed period of time designated for the delivery of courses. York’s sessions are Fall/ Winter and Summer. See also Sessional Dates.
- Policy
- Students who are ineligible to proceed in their academic program at the end of a Fall/Winter session due to not meeting progression or minimum GPA requirements may enroll in courses in the subsequent Summer session providing they have satisfied the required prerequisites.
- Students who at the end of the Summer session achieve the required GPA for progression in their current program may continue in in the subsequent Fall/Winter session.
- Roles and Responsibilities
- The Office of the University Registrar is responsible for informing students about the eligibility requirements to continue in their program without interruption following the release of the summer academic decisions. This will be based on the prescribed GPA for a student’s current program of study.

- This Policy shall be reviewed at least every five years.
