Continuing Student Award Applications, Undergraduate BEd and BA
Awards and bursaries are available to Faculty of Education students to assist with the cost of university tuition. If you meet the criteria of academic excellence and financial need, you are encouraged to apply.
There are several deadlines.
1) The Continuing Student Awards deadline is September 15th and requires students to complete Student Financial Profile.
2) Students will then need to submit the award application(s) by completing the Awards Application and upload the award form, their personal statement and a recommendation letter (if applicable) below. Deadline for the personal statement and recommendation letter is October 15.
This bursary has been established in the memory of Dr. Brian Crawford, a professor with Faculty of Education who passed away in the summer of 2005. Dr. Crawford worked with a wide variety of students throughout his career, young and old, kindergarten to university, Cambridge Bay, N.W.T. to schools in the Greater Toronto Area. He thrived on being a teacher, using his love of literature to make his classroom an inspiring place. This bursary is available to students currently enrolled in the either the concurrent or the consecutive program in the Faculty of Education at York University. Preference may be given to students who are passionate about promoting literacy, who are excited to teach in an elementary school setting, and who are committed to supporting children with special needs. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident, or protected person, resident of Ontario and must demonstrate financial need.

Established by Stephanie and Winston Ling, the Cornerstone Leadership in Action Awards will be presented annually to a student enrolled in their second year of the Faculty of Education's concurrent teacher education program and a student enrolled in the Faculty of Education's graduate program who has completed either the concurrent or consecutive teacher education program at York. One award will be available for students from each of these programs. The awards recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership potential or ability and who embrace attributes such as honesty, integrity, passion, enthusiasm, innovation, creativity, humility and trustworthiness. Nominations will be accepted for students who embody the following:
- Has an exemplary reputation among peers, supervisors, faculty members and within relevant communities
- Employs innovative teaching practices
- Promotes a positive school culture
- Has the capacity to foster leadership qualities in others
- Works effectively with families and community members
- Supports the concept of mentorship, in relation to peers and students
- Believes in continuing professional education
- Has demonstrated standards of excellence in his/her professional activities
The Dean Ron Owston Award will be granted annually to one (1) student enrolled in the BA Educational Studies Program and one (1) student in the Master of Leadership and Community Engagement in the Faculty of Education with an award valued at $500.00 each. The awards will be granted to domestic or international students who, during their first year have a minimum 7.5 or A average and demonstrate financial need. The undergraduate award will be adjudicated by the Faculty of Education awards committee and the graduate award will be adjudicated by the Graduate Program in the Faculty of Education.
The BA in Educational Studies and the Master of Leadership and Community Engagement programs were established by University Professor Dr. Ron Owston under his leadership as Dean of the Faculty of Education. A pioneer in teaching, learning, and research on the internet since its early days, he also was founding Director of the Institute for Research in Learning Technologies.
The Enoch Turner Schoolhouse Foundation Bursary is granted to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education who are enrolled in the BEd program (any year), or in 3rd or 4th year of the BA Educational Studies program. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate financial need. Applicants must also submit a one-page statement outlining their interest in Canadian history and public education, along with their teaching goals related to Canadian history, heritage preservation and/or universal access to public education.
This award was established by the Jamison family to provide $500 to a deserving York University student with a preference given to a Faculty of Education student. All Faculty of Education students enrolled in practicum courses are eligible to apply. The Award is based on academic promise and financial need.
One recommendation letter from a member of York University’s Faculty of Education who is familiar with the applicant’s work is required. The letter must address academic promise.
This award was established by the LearningStation.com, an Internet-based Canadian company. Teacher Candidates enrolled in a practicum course and all Consecutive students are eligible to apply. Awards will be granted to a student who has demonstrated innovative ways to uses technology in a learning environment with lesser weight being given to financial need. Recipients must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents, be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need.
One letter of recommendation from a Course Director who is familiar with the applicant's work is required. The letter must address the applicant's contribution towards innovative use of technology.
This $500 award has been established by the Faculty of Education Alumni Association to honour Professor Mary Sue McCarthy, an outstanding educator and a founding member of the Faculty.
All Faculty of Education students are eligible to apply. Awards will be decided based on academic promise and financial need. One recommendation letter from a member of York University’s Faculty of Education who is familiar with the applicant’s work is required. The letter must address teaching promise.
The Patricia E. Harvey Memorial Scholarship was established by friends, colleagues and candidates to commemorate a professor of outstanding quality. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of professional and academic excellence and is open to all candidates graduating from the Concurrent Bachelor of Education program. The successful candidate will have a minimum grade point average of 6.0 in their academic faculty and a minimum grade point average of 7.0 in the Faculty of Education.
The Patrick Solomon Memorial Award in Urban Diversity will be available for two candidates in the Faculty of Education. One award will be available for students in each of the graduate and undergraduate programs. Recipients will demonstrate a dedication to the principles of social justice, equity and community service, as demonstrated through course assignments, projects and initiatives. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons and residents of Ontario who demonstrate financial need.
This small award was established by the Faculty of Education in memory of Professor Peter E. Board. All Faculty of Education students are eligible to apply. Applicants must show both financial need and academic promise. One recommendation letter from a member of York University's Faculty of Education who is familiar with applicant's work is required. The letter must address teaching promise.
This award was established by a bequest from Savitri Ahuja, and the love and adoration of her family members. Savitri was a teacher in India, who immigrated to Canada in 1974, and attended York University to upgrade her teaching credentials. She had a passion and love for teaching her students who, just like her family, were her pride and joy.
Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) Award – deadline April 1
Established in 1987, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) Award is awarded annually to a graduating teacher from each of Ontario’s faculties of education.
The purpose of the award is to acknowledge the academic excellence of a teacher candidate in one or more of the pre-service Catholic religion courses offered by the faculty.

Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Scholarships and Bursaries
The ETFO Scholarships and Bursaries Program offers financial incentives to: members and non-members entering faculties of education; members studying at the graduate level; and members upgrading their qualifications at publicly funded universities/institutions in Ontario. This includes bursaries for members of designated groups, including Black and Indigenous educators, and bursaries for children of ETFO members.
