This month’s graduate student profile features Zaitun Pwin, a third-year PhD student in the Graduate Program in Education. Her research focuses on the role of education for Rohingya youths in Canada and the language and cultural socialization with regard to Canadian schooling. Waaban is an Anishinabe (Ojibwa) word meaning it is tomorrow. It signifies commitment to a holistic program of teaching and learning that acknowledges the impacts of colonialism, and draws on the wisdom of ancestral teachings and contemporary leaders to put Indigenous futures into Indigenous hands. Waaban Indigenous Teacher Education includes attention to contemporary urban, rural and reserve perspectives and teachings from a diversity of nations. Students are introduced to cultural and community resources and have opportunities to learn from and with Indigenous educators.
Every week, I am motivated and excited to come to my community practicum placement in the Teaching Commons. One of my principal duties as a Student Consultant on Teaching at York (SCOTAY) involves acting as a liaison between instructors and their student population.
Students in Heather Bourrie’s “Thinking Mathematically” course recently had an opportunity to participate in an experiential education activity to co-plan and teach a mathematics lesson for their peers.

Congratulations to teacher candidate Kara Nagel who was recently awarded the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) Intermediate/Senior Scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship is awarded to an Ontario teacher candidate in the Intermediate/Senior division who demonstrates a high level of preparedness for teacher education through examples of community involvement, background, and life experiences.
