BEd Teaching Subjects

Intermediate-Senior


Students must prepare to teach two subjects from the following list with at least six full-year (or equivalent) university courses in the first teaching subject and three full-year (or equivalent) university courses in the second teaching subject:

Ineligible Teaching Subject Combinations


Students may not complete any combination of the following teaching subjects:

  • Two Business-related teaching subjects
  • Business and Economics teaching subjects
  • Business and Computer Science teaching subjects
  • Economics and Computer Science teaching subjects

Important Notes


Business Studies

  • As a first teaching subject, at least three full-year (or equivalent) courses from the teaching subject selected and the remaining courses may be from a related business field. As a second teaching subject, at least two full-year (or equivalent) courses from the teaching subject selected.
  • Students cannot select any combination of Business Studies as their two teaching subjects. Students may select only one from the four business options offered (only one of Accounting, Entrepreneurship, General, or Information and Communication Technology).
  • Students cannot combine any of the Business Studies with Economics for their two teaching subjects. Students cannot combine any of the Business Studies with Computer Studies for their two teaching subjects.

English

  • Students must have courses spanning three of the following subject areas: Shakespeare, Canadian Literature, Post-Colonial and Gender Studies and Language & Writing.

Environmental Science

  • The best preparation for teaching environmental science is a BSc degree or an equivalent Honours degree in environmental science.

Family Studies

  • As a first teaching subject, six full-year (or equivalent) courses in Family Studies, or three full-year (or equivalent) courses with family focus from Psychology, Sociology or Social Science or a combination of these courses, and the remaining three full-year (or equivalent) courses from Early Childhood Education, Business Studies, Health Studies or Fashion Studies, in any combination. As a second teaching subject, three full-year (or equivalent) courses in Family Studies, or two full-year (or equivalent) courses with family focus from Psychology, Sociology or Social Science or any combination, and one full-year (or equivalent) course in ECE, Business Studies, Health Studies or Fashion Studies.

Fine Arts (Dance, Dramatic Arts, Music-Instrumental and/or Visual Arts)

  • As a first teachable students must have six full-year (or equivalent) courses in the teaching subject of which three full-year (or equivalent) courses are studio, and second teachable three full-year (or equivalent) courses and two full-year (or equivalent) courses are studio.

French as a Second Language

  • Students must have six full-year courses (or equivalent) in French. Three full-year courses or equivalent in language and one full-year course or equivalent in Linguistics. As a second teaching subject must have three full-year courses (or equivalent) in French. Two full-year courses in language and one full year course or equivalent in Linguistics.

Geography

  • It is recommended students have a course in "Introduction to Geoinformatics" (or its equivalent).

Health and Physical Education

  • As a first and second teachable students must have four practicum (e.g., PKIN) activity courses; from the six core areas. The six core areas include: aquatics, team sports, individual and dual sports, dance/gymnastics, track and field and emergency care.

History

  • Students must have at least one full-year (or equivalent) Canadian History course. As well, students will be given preference if other History courses reflect the diverse nature of society. Thus, we would recommend Social History courses (involving themes such as race, gender, ethnicity and class), and courses reflecting the histories of non-Western nations.

Law

  • Criminology and Law & Society courses as well as courses from a LLB degree will be acceptable.

Mathematics

  • Students must have courses spanning all of the following subject areas: Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics, and Proof-based Mathematics. Statistics courses taken in other subject areas (e.g., Psychology or Sociology) will only account for a maximum of one half-course towards the teaching subject requirement.

Science - Biology

  • Applicants may use Kinesiology courses towards their teaching subject, provided the Kinesiology courses contain sufficient human anatomy or physiology topics.

Science - General

  • Students must have a combination of courses spanning two of the following subject areas:
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics
  • We accept additional courses from Earth and Atmospheric Space Science or Natural Science.

Social Sciences - General

  • Students must have completed courses in at least three full-year (or equivalent) courses spanning two of the following subject areas:
    • Anthropology
    • Humanities
    • Psychology
    • Philosophy
    • Sociology
    • Social Science

NOTE: There is potential for course conflict or repetition in choosing similar teaching subjects, such as ones that fall under the Business, Computer Studies or Economics, Geography, Environmental Science and Science categories. Although students may select some of these subject combinations, students are advised that they may have the same Course Director and same/similar course outline for both teaching subject classes.

Junior-Intermediate


Students must prepare to teach one subject from the following list with at least four full-year (or equivalent) university courses in the teaching subject.

Dance

  • Students must have four full-year (or equivalent) undergraduate courses in the teaching subject, with at least two of these being studio courses.

Dramatic Arts

  • You must have four full-year (or equivalent) undergraduate courses in the teaching subject, with at least two of these being studio courses.

English

  • Students must have completed at least three full-year (or equivalent) courses spanning three of the following subject areas: Shakespeare, Canadian Literature, Post-Colonial and Gender Studies and Language & Writing.

First Nations, Métis and Inuit Studies

  • Students must have four full-year (or equivalent) undergraduate courses in the teaching subject.

French as a Second Language

  • Students must have four full-year courses (or equivalent) in French. Three full-year courses or equivalent in language and one full year course or equivalent in Linguistics.

Geography

  • Recommended a full course in "Introduction to Geoinformatics" (or equivalent).

Visual Arts

  • Students must have four full-year (or equivalent) undergraduate courses in the teaching subject, with at least two of these being studio courses.
