Overview
Newton Wesley Rowell (1867-1941) graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1891. He went on to a distinguished career as a Canadian jurist and statesman. He was elected to the Ontario legislature in 1911 and then served in the Canadian House of Commons from 1917-1921. In 1936 he became Chief Justice of Ontario, and in 1937 he was appointed by the Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King to head the Royal Commission on Dominion-Provincial Relations. His grandson, the Honourable N.R. Jackman, has endowed this award to honour Newton Rowell's memory and contribution to Canada.
This scholarship will be given annually to full-time students registered in the Graduate Program in Law who have demonstrated academic excellence. The investment income will support students who have been awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS). Preference will be given to students pursuing studies in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
