Anam Ahmad, Finance
Among friends and family, I often catch myself in the spotlight of their glances when decisions cannot be made. They often perceive me as an individual who has the competence and knowledge for making well thought of decisions with ease.
This is not a skill I always possessed. The cards I have been dealt as an Indian Muslim woman navigating through 25 years of my life in two different countries have shaped me in many ways. Kuwait, with its desert heat and strict rules and India, with its diversity and liveliness have enabled me to become adaptable and quick on my feet.
Having experienced an inconsistent and individualistic system in many areas of my life including education, I have a desire to gain knowledge of how university policies are made, reviewed and revised. As a student for life, I believe that academics and the way they are evaluated should be held to its highest standards.
Being part of the Academic Planning and Policy Committee of a prestigious university such as York University, would allow me to partake in academic policy decision making along with understanding and reviewing the educational standards that our university embodies. It would enable me to understand the systems that back the reputation of York and be part of a platform which serves as a supplement for knowledge and self-empowerment.

As a fourth-year doctoral student in Mechanical Engineering at York University, I am excited to express my interest in serving as a standing committee member on the Academic Planning and Policy Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council. I am currently the vice president and CUPE representative of the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Association (MEGSA), and I also participate in the tenure and promotion committee in the Mechanical Engineering Department. With my extensive knowledge of graduate studies, academic policies, planning, standards, and voting procedures, I am confident that I can make valuable contributions to this committee. I understand that this role requires a significant amount of dedication and commitment, and I am eager to leave a positive and lasting impact on the graduate studies community.
Venkat Lakshmi Aysola, Environmental Studies
As a mature student who would eventually like to teach at the university level, I have a vested interest in the ways in which education is delivered and the direction that the university takes. I've found some changes that the university has made in the years I have been here -- while they might have been necessary -- have left a gap in the programs; foundational courses for example. It is unfortunate. As a Teaching Assistant, I’ve found that it impacts the students’ interest, motivation, and direction. However I don't understand the issues and processes that have led to certain decisions and the reason, I would love to serve on the Standing Committee. To learn and be part of policy-making and academic planning, so that the university can address the educational needs of students in the current climate as well as be forward thinking, is something I would like to be a part of. I’ve over 3 years of Teaching Assistant experience which has given me some insight and interest in planning.

As an incoming PhD student I am interested in pursuing a role within the York community where I can be involved in developing the long-term academic and policy goals of the University. Before I started my LLM (also at York) I practiced management-side labour and employment law. A portion of my practice involved creating and advising clients on their internal human resources and labour relations policies. I found this work to be exceptionally fulfilling and I truly believe that a solid policy foundation is the key to the success of any organization. I think this experience is endlessly transferrable to a role on the Academic Policy & Planning Committee and I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to bring my practical experience and academic interest to a role on Committee in the coming year.

I received my Bachelor of honor majoring in Economics at York University and also received a graduate diploma in Management at York University. I received an offer of graduate program in management practice and will attend the program in this Fall. I have been working in the supply chain industry for years. My interest in serving on a standing committee is to prioritize student learning, excellence, and success in Yok University. Through years of academic experience in York University and working experience in supply chain business, I m extremely willing to help York's students gain more skills and enhance academic experience as a Academic Planning & Policy Committee member.

It is important that these decisions are influenced by the student voice, as the decisions made will primarily be impacting students! Leslyn Gombakomba, Gender, Feminist & Women’s Studies
My scholarly journey has left me asking a lot of questions, in terms of which subjects should be included in introductory courses, and what resources are needed to guide new students in linking their studies with their career goals. Having been a student at York University since 2006, I have a better understanding of academic policies as they pertain to students, student life on campus, and faculty staff. I believe that academic life is a balance between students and faculty, and that the school has an obligation to provide the necessary tools for both to succeed.
York University caters for a diverse range of students, both local and international, and it takes a lot of planning to make sure that at the end of a student’s life at York, they are able to link with employers, or start their own businesses. York universities receives students who can pay their own fees and those who cannot, hence it is important to know where to refer students for financial assistance. Every student who comes to York wants to feel safe, hence in planning for academics, it is also important to plan for student safety. It is imperative to produce a well-rounded student who excels academically and can be a York ambassador in sports. York students are renowned for the best research projects which are implemented, not only in Canada, but world wide.
Being included as part of a Committee that is responsible for academic and policy planning for these students will be an honor.
Vedanth Govi, Social Anthropology
I am an international student PhD candidate at the department of Anthropology in LAPS. My doctoral project traces how international South Asians students exist within the larger infrastructures of internationalisation, migration, and publics within Canadian Higher education. As someone that has dedicated their time serving on other FGS committees, I am also familiar with sticking to the strict timeline that volunteering on a standing committee requires and will be able to deliver on the quick turnaround time. Prior to joining York University, I was an active member of the "Decolonize the Curriculum" committee at University College Dublin and think that that experience can contribute meaningfully to the work of the Standing Committee on Academic Planning and Policy. Furthermore, if I am selected to serve on this committee, I will ensure that my service within the standing committee reflects FGS being well integrated with the DEDI mission that York University has been pursuing consistently.

My name is Antoinette Jacintho. I have over 10 years working experience in banking. I have a strong background in electronic banking, card products, marketing, and client relationship management in the banking sector. I am looking forward in channeling my expertise in strong communication and client support skills to working closely with the Dean/Council in order to assist plan, develop and review polices that will help improve the academic affairs of the Faculty. This will afford me the opportunity to explore and try new things outside my comfort zone in financial policy analysis, data governance and consulting.

I am a prospective marketing student, and I am confident that my participation in the Academic Planning and Policy Committee will greatly contribute to its success and improve the quality of education at our school as a whole.
First off, I have a great understanding of strategic planning and policy creation because of my academic background in business administration. I can decipher complicated data, spot significant trends, and provide data-driven insights that will be useful in creating efficient academic policy.
Second, I have developed my interpersonal and communication abilities from my earlier involvement in student leadership roles. Veronica Angelica Jara Rodriguez, Environmental Studies
My professional background as an executive has provided me with invaluable experience in the realms of planning and policy development, which align closely with the mandate of the Faculty Council.
Throughout my career, I actively participated in board meetings where crucial discussions on planning and policy matters took place. While I held a non-voting role, I played an essential part by representing the perspectives of workers and contributing valuable insights to the decision-making process. Following the board's decisions, I was responsible for translating these policies into manuals and facilitating their implementation in the workplace.
As an executive assistant, maintaining confidentiality was of utmost importance, but I also recognized the significance of communicating with staff to identify areas where existing policies fell short and improvements could be made. My role as a bridge between staff, executives, and the board allowed me to foster effective communication and ensure that policies addressed the needs of all stakeholders. I also collaborated with the executive and board chair, understanding the importance of proactive policy planning. I learned to anticipate and address future challenges by analyzing socio-economic trends and consistently updating policies to align with emerging changes.
Joining the Faculty Council's Standing Committee would be an ideal opportunity for me to leverage my expertise in policy development, planning, and effective communication. I am confident that my unique perspective and experience will contribute significantly to advising the Dean on academic policy, reviewing standards, and recommending changes that enhance the Faculty's overall effectiveness.

I am Gagandeep Singh Kalra going to start my Schulich journey in September 2023.
I have always been a part of different committees during my Bachelor's which has put me through tough times and situations that made me confident regarding serving my fellow students and professors.
I have led the teams for annual festivals at the university previously, and have done the teaching classes for underprivileged kids surrounding the university campus. This is something of my interest where I can be the best representative.
Becoming a member of the Academic Planning & Policy Committee makes me a passionate participant because I want to contribute to the development and improvement of academic programs and policies.

Ever since I can remember I always loved looking into how things worked and how to improve my surroundings. This has helped me navigate the my own world within the education curriculum. Coming from a person who was diagnosed with ADHD in my primary years and depression as I got older, I felt the need to help students, more specifically young students, understand the beauty in education. I have worked in the administration field for some time now and would like more experience that relates to my own field. I am currently working towards my Masters of Education with a diploma in Language and Literacy at York University and definitely believe standing for this committee would help me link my knowledge the real world and also help prepare me for my academic career in policy making and revision.

My experience working in Woodsworth College Registrar's Office at Univeristy of Toronto has placed me at the forefront of policy analysis and interpretation. I educated students with policy clarification and enabled them to make well-informed decisions. I’ve gone through multiple education institutions (Private college, Humber College, University of Toronto and now York University) which has given me experience and knowledge of policies and how they impact student’s experiences.
My goals and aspirations align with the duties of this volunteer position and, if elected, I will execute my duties to the best of my ability. I will enhance York University’s governance, advise policy-makers, and always make recommendations at the behest of students.

Although I haven't ever been a part of a Standing Committee in my academic life, in my professional journey, my first ever role at a startup company involved coordinating with several teams, handling a team of almost 35-40 people myself, getting their feedback, and constantly brainstorming about what new policies could make the process better and provide a better user experience. At that point, I realized this is something that I liked to do and since then I have developed an interest in it. Being a part of this committee will help me exercise & sharpen my policy-making skills as well as help me understand the nitty-gritty of academic issues and find ways to solve them. Due to many of the hardships and challenges that all students, including both domestic and international students experience at post secondary institutions, there continues to be a need for re-shaping policies. As a former Student Rights Advocate with the University of Ottawa Students’ Union, I have engaged in advocating for student rights through various avenues. I am an internationally trained lawyer and a legal academic. I hold a PhD in law from the University of Malaya, Malaysia and a Master of Laws degree in international business and Commercial law from the University of West London, UK. I am originally from Sri Lanka. I obtained my Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
I served as an Associate Professor of Law for 7 years at a Sri Lankan public university. I have published legal research in international scholarly journals and conferences and have been awarded for research excellence. After relocating to Canada in 2022, I completed the NCA examinations and am currently in the process of fulfilling the remaining requirements to become a barrister and solicitor. To gain a deeper understanding of Canadian Law, I enrolled in an LLM program in General Law at the Osgoode Hall Law School of York University.
Currently, I serve as the Research and Policy Compliance Officer at Centennial College and play the crucial role of advising on legal and policy compliance and development and overseeing contract review.
I am interested in serving on the Academic Planning and Policy Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies as my extensive experience in the academic sector and expertise in policy, align well with this opportunity. My background which qualifies me to serve on the Standing Committee for Academic Planning & Policy is two-fold: first, the experience I have as a student that went in their first year from a 1.5 GPA to in their MA having a GPA of 4.2. I understand the pitfalls and struggles of associated with academic expectations, all too well. I have learned and improved, and seen academic policies from the perspective of there being too much (reading) and also thinking there was too little (reading). Secondly, I have served on the graduate studies committee at Acadia University; as well, I have also served as a Member-at-Large on the Acadia Graduate Society, as the Arts Representative.
My interest in serving on the Standing Committee for Academic Planning & Policy is to bring my experience to the table to support students. I will do this by acting as a representative for students at all levels of academic achievement, making sure that academic planning is both fair and rigorous. By listening to fellow graduate students and bridging expectations of students and professors through active communication, I will make student issues an issue regarding Academic Planning & Policy.

I am a third year PhD candidate in the department of Biology, researching the long-term impacts of climate and landscape changes on insect communities in protected areas. I have served on the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) Awards Committee and as the CUPE 3903 Steward for the Association of Graduate Students in the Biological Sciences (AGSBS) from 2021 – 2023. I currently serve on the Entomological Society of Canada’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and am a student representative for the Canadian Society for Ecology & Evolution.
As a graduate student, I have spent time mentoring students and volunteers in various capacities, including both lab and field settings. I have extensive experience working with and on committees in a variety of roles both within the York Community and the broader Entomology/Ecology community. My time spent as a member of FGS Awards was very rewarding and while it allowed me the privilege to adjudicate awards, it also provided me the chance to speak up on various issues graduate students face in terms of award application and provide insight on how the university could improve this. This being said, I would like to continue in this capacity and continue to serve the Faculty of Graduate Studies community by serving on the Appeals and Academic Honesty Committee and help in enhancing the graduate student experience. David (he/him) is an incoming Masters of Social Work student with a BA in Psychology and Philosophy. His professional work centers on mental health, addictions, and community development with special emphasis on advocacy and relationship building. Through graduate studies at York, David pursues a career in social services and social policy development.

Lara Farah, Sociology
My name is Lara, I am a Middle Eastern woman who's been in Canada for just over 5 years and is still learning how to BE in Canada. Academia has been the space within which I've been negotiating the changes in my life and deconstructing the mental schemes I have brought with me from home. It took me that long (5 years) to feel comfortable and confident enough to see myself filling any such administrative position. So here I am, nominating myself for a position that I aim to take very seriously if I attain. Honesty and ethics are things I've pursued my whole life, hence why I have struggled with people's disconfirmation of my progressive, honest, and critical voice as an Arab woman. But at the same time, I have experienced enough exclusion and injustice to UNDERSTAND life circumstances. This potentially makes me a person who is capable of filling a position that deals with appeals and academic honesty in a fair and humanistic manner 🙂

I am a retired pediatric cardiologist currently working for the Coroner's Office, enrolled in the Health Law LLM and very appreciative of the opportunity to continue my lifelong learning. Throughout my academic career, I have always been interested in supporting my institution and faculty through volunteering my time. I have tribunal experience at the University of Toronto (13 years) and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (6 years). I would be pleased to serve as the graduate student representative on the FGS Appeals & Academic Honesty Committee.

As a former business manager at Humber College working alongside the Dean, we received many student appeal requests throughout the school year. While I did not serve on the standing committee to hear such appeals, I often wished I had. I find the process interesting and would feel honoured to have the opportunity to hear such student appeals and have a voice in the outcome at York University.

I am interested in the Appeals & Academic Honesty Committee as I would love to get involved in the FGS council and have previous experience in both student advocacy and academic committees. I have previously served on departmental committees at the University of Manitoba including the Department of Biological Sciences Council, the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, and the Outreach Committee. For faculty service, I was a part of the FoS Academic Honesty Committee. I also served as the President of the Biological Undergraduate Students Association at the University of Manitoba for 4 years and served on the Faculty of Science Students Association for 1 year where I worked in student services and advising. I am a teacher turned legal and law professional. My academic journey has been shaped by a firm commitment to ethics and professionalism. Throughout my studies, I have always strived to maintain the highest standards of learning integrity because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my academic mentors and role models (like my former department heads, Prof. Jennifer Welsh, the former Canadian ambassador to the UN, or Prof. Thomas Homer-Dixon, one of the greatest Canadian environmentalists). I am expressing my interest in joining this vital position of the Appeals & Academic Honesty Committee. The crux of our academic system is built on integrity and honesty, and it is crucial for all academic institutions to safeguard these qualities, especially in the wake of technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and the vast network of “papers-for-hire.” I believe that my experience as a Civil Litigator over the past several years would qualify me to bring my knowledge and integrity as a lawyer to serve this important function. I’m passionate about joining the Appeals & Academic Honesty Committee. As an internationally trained lawyer with 9 years post call professional experience, I have served in various roles with high stakes in terms of sensitivity of issues involved. For example, I co-chaired the associates promotion and disciplinary committee in my previous employment. This afforded me the opportunity to apply various decision making approaches in arriving at decisions that meet the desired procedural and substantive justice. The experience adequately prepared me for the present role. I recognise that people have genuine reasons why they fall short of set moral and/ethical standards and where the rules permit, acting in good faith may serve as a mitigating factor, if not a sufficient excuse. At the same time, I recognized the importance of enforcing ethical rules in a manner that would achieve the underlining policy objective while at the same time respecting established rules and procedures particularly the fair hearing rule and other principles of natural justice. I therefore believe that I will be a worthy addition to the committee and look forward to contributing my quota.

I am no stranger to dealing with multifaceted issues, and I take pride in my capacity to consider multiple perspectives before arriving at well-informed decisions. Lisa Seiler, Sociology
I have been student representative on the Appeals and Academic Honesty Committee (AAHC) and, by extension, FGS Council for the past two years, and am applying to continue for another two years. I am a PhD student and older adult who brings a wealth of committee experience in various work roles to my student experience at York. As a TA in the Department of Sociology, I have accumulated quite a bit of experience with academic honesty cases. That has enabled me to make presentations to faculty and TAs on academic honesty. AAHC is a committee with only four members (three faculty and one student), and usually two leave and two remain each year. This year, only one faculty member has agreed to return, leaving a continuity gap that I would be happy to fill. As student rep on the AAHC and Council, I have provided a student perspective for both the cases presented and the regulations scheduled for review. In cases presented, I am able to see many sides of a situation and can consider the student’s point-of-view as well as the impacts of the decisions on the wider student body. In document review, my detailed and logical approach is appreciated by staff and faculty, as I take both an overall and a student view. I am following with interest the university’s approach to new AI tools. I appreciate the opportunity to be of service to York graduate students and hope to be allowed to continue.
Claudius Soodeen, Labour Relations & Employment Law
I am a student in the Professional LLM program (Labour Relations & Employment Law) and an educator with experience addressing student appeals and academic integrity (AI) issues fairly and transparently. I have a longstanding interest in AI and am a member of the STLHE Committee on Academic Integrity and Contract Cheating (CAICC) and on the board of the Manitoba Academic Integrity Network.
From my experience, research and discussions with leading Canadian researchers on this topic, I bring a reflective and realistic perspective to allegations of AI breaches and appeals that includes looking not just at incidents or requests brought forward, but also at their contexts from a broad, human-focused vantage point. I believe this to be a crucial approach to ensuring that the needs of students and the institution are well-served by decisions on appeals and academic integrity.

I am a doctoral student in the Psychology department specialising in Quantitative Methods. I believe that academic honesty and transparency is important not just for the health of any research area, but also to improve the relationship between academia and the general public. I try to employ and spread open sciences practices in my research. I also have experience in the peaceful correction of an important open dataset. If I were elected to the Appeals and Academic Honesty committee, I would try to continue to embody these values in the discussion of any judgements.

I get it. Balancing school, work, and personal life is challenging. Not to mention the convenience of having access to electronic articles, using Ctrl + C - Ctrl +V, the notorious but catchy TL;DR mentality, and the constant bombardment and temptations of apps and ads that offer ‘substantive aid’ to students who are running against time -- let’s just say as a student who often sits in the back of the class, I see and hear many things. But I also believe in the perfidy of seeing as truth, and here is where context, the student’s opportunity to be heard, absolutely matters.
I have skimmed through York U’s Academic Honesty & Student Code of Conduct and the Senate’s Policy, regulations, and guidelines. English is my second/third language. I moonlight as a paralegal and routinely prepare briefs for hearings before agencies, boards and tribunals. Interestingly, I have had two clients for whom I have had to decline their retainers because they “absolutely had to win” against the institution’s plagiarism allegations. But my understanding is, the committee’s main purpose is not to be punitive. Given the countless temptations in life - all for others’ benefit and not ours – students’ accountability to honesty and integrity are rigorously tested, the committee believes, and I too value, honesty and integrity are part of the glue that holds society together, and we all must put this understanding to practice.
It will be a privilege to serve on the committee!

My name is Olabisi Abiola, a doctoral candidate enrolled in the Applied Linguistics program here at York University. My research interests in language policies, social advocacy and governance motivated me to volunteer to serve on the awards committee. I believe my previous leadership assignments serving collaboratively and independently at various organizations either as a teacher, student leader, corps member, and unit head have prepared me for this position. During my time as an undergraduate student in Communication & Media Studies at York, I served on the department’s 2022 Tenure & Promotions Committee; this academic service was an excellent experience—working alongside an esteemed committee of professors and an accomplished graduate student—and this valuable opportunity to participate in evaluating staff files offered me first-hand insight into what lies beyond the front-facing research side of academia. As a fourth-year undergraduate aspiring to pursue graduate studies, this service truly was one of the highlights of my time at York.
Serving on the Awards Committee as an incoming graduate student would expand my knowledge of this aspect of the academic world to provide me with a better understanding of what it means to be an active participant in the University community, from an entirely different lens afforded by my community work through extensive volunteer experience as the former Communications Officer, former Co-President, and current Chief Returning Officer at Jack.org York (an organization dedicated to de-stigmatizing mental health) and by my dedicated academic work as a 2023 Governor General Silver Medal recipient.
I would truly enjoy learning more about what occurs “behind the scenes" at York, so to speak. Alyssa Anne Di Bartolomeo, Psychology
I am currently pursuing my PhD in clinical psychology at York University under the supervision of Dr. Tali Boritz. My research program primarily focuses on the psychotherapy process and how to optimize psychotherapy training with an emphasis on the therapeutic alliance. Following my studies, I aim to pursue an academic career to continue improving psychotherapy training with an ultimate goal of improving client outcomes. Both my Master’s and doctoral research has graciously been funded by SSHRC’s Canadian Graduate Scholarships. My Master’s research, which investigated the effects of psychotherapist experience, emotion regulation, and humility on psychotherapist performance, was nominated for the York University thesis award and is now under review for publication. Throughout my graduate degrees I have been involved in several research projects. I have a passion for disseminating research and this is evidenced by my involvement in 15 peer-reviewed publications (3 first-authored), 13 oral presentations, and over 30 poster presentations at national and international conferences. My research contributions and academic success have received recognition through 14 scholarships, awards, and grants. I understand the importance of graduate funding to aid with research development and execution, as well as enable high caliber scholars to conduct their work without added financial stress. Thus, I would appreciate the opportunity to join the Standing Awards Committee.
Alireza Esmaeili Moghadam, Civil Engineering
Despite growing up in a financially disadvantaged family in the deprived city of Kerman, Iran, I faced additional hardships with the loss of my mother and siblings during my childhood. However, I remained determined and persevered through these challenges to pursue higher education. I ranked within the top 0.3% out of over 300,000 participants, earning a government full scholarship for a Bachelor's degree. Passionate about civil engineering's captivating aspects of analysis, design, and construction, I chose to pursue a degree in the field.
During my B.Sc., I served as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for over ten courses and achieved a position among the top five students in the university. I was selected by the university to participate in the Olympiad exam, where I secured the 1st position at the local stage and ranked 14th in Iran among all the top selected students in the country. During my MSc studies, I accomplished the publication of three papers in top journals (Q1) within the field, each with an impressive impact factor ranging from 4 to 7.4.
I am thrilled about the opportunity to join the Awards Committee. Being a part of this committee will allow me to gain valuable experience in reviewing applications and utilizing my knowledge and expertise to vote for the most deserving scholarship applicants. Alita Gideon, Kinesiology & Health Science
I am master's student in the Kinesiology and Health Science (KAHS) Department. I completed my undergrad at York, with a double major in Biomedical Science and Kinesiology.
I've always had a passion for community involvement. Throughout my undergrad, I served as the elected Faculty of Science Caucus Student Representative on the petitions committee. Through this role, I was expected to read through student petitions and vote if they shall be accepted. I learned how to reason through my thoughts and get to a decision, while keeping a balance between sympathy and adhering to the rules.
I was also honoured to act as a York Federation of Students (YFS) Faculty of Science Student Director, a frosh leader for Bethune college and a class representative with Student Ombuds Services (SOS) Bethune.
As a graduate student, I continue to enjoy getting involved. I am a member of the the Race Inclusion and Supportive Environments (RISE) committee, KAHS Graduate Student Association conference co-chair and a Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 3903 Joint Health and Safety Committee member.
Through all these experiences, I learned that working towards positive change for the York community does not happen overnight. It takes a lot of time and commitment. Therefore, I am motivated to always continue striving for that change.
I am looking to broaden my experiences, which is why I am interested in joining the Awards Committee. I believe this position will enable me to grow as an individual while continuing to strive for impactful change.

I firmly believe that the excellence of any academic institution rests on the shoulders of its students and the contributions of its Faculty Council. As an international student at Schulich, I want to extend my skillset and expertise to hold a position on the Awards Committee with the Faculty Council. I am an advocate of High court from Pakistan and an NCA student as single course at York university, Osgood law school , I studied for one year from University of Alberta to fulfil the NCA requirement's but now am doing my remaining courses from the Osgood.
My goal is to serve all the communities in Canada as a Lawyer and to provide legal services to all neglected parts of the society.
As we see that there are still some gaps in the law and sometimes it does not cover all aspects and procedures. So a competent lawyer with high professional and ethical values can meet these requirements. In the presence of professional conduct of the lawyers there are many opportunities, which someone can avail but still it needs more cosmetics, polish and practical exposure.
Normally as we see that many disturbed people knock at the door of Justice, their rights have been infringed, they are deprived or they are victim of cruelty. They all should be treated fairly and reasonably.
According to a phrase legal practice is profession of the lords and a lordship is mostly developed with high etiquettes and values through educational institutions. An institution is always a torch bearer of principles as well as the academic and practical expertise.
The law students are always cream of the society or a top part of a living tree of the society. They should be awarded and promoted accordingly and none of them should be neglected or ignored.

As a dedicated Ph.D. student in Law, I am deeply passionate about fostering excellence in academia and contributing to the growth of our academic community. It is with great enthusiasm that I seek a nomination for a standing committee position in the awards committee.
Throughout my academic journey, I have witnessed the transformative power of recognition and celebration of outstanding achievements in teaching, learning, service, and research. Hon otto Edward Makmot is Canadian Barrister and Solicitor -Law Society of Ontario Canada- Call- 2010. I am also an Advocates of Uganda/ East African law Society. I served in the 10th Parliament of Uganda as Vice Chair Rules Privilege and Discipline and Member of Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.
I'm interested in service in this committee in order to bring both a hybrid Canadian and International Empirical perspective having practiced in Canada and abroad.

I'm Younes Parvin, I've lived most of my life in Bangkok, Thailand, and my educational background is in business and management.
During my stay there, I taught various subjects for over 9 years as a teacher / tutor and I gained a lot of knowledge and experience to be able to distinguish people with different needs and abilities. This allowed me as a teacher to distribute my focus and attention on those who needed me the most.
This experience also gave me the ability to see the hidden talents, passions and those small attempts people make to improve themselves. I will now be beginning my graduate studies at Schulich School of Business as a Master of Marketing (MMKG) student in the Fall 2023 Term.
During my journey at York, I encountered a lot of challenges and was always able motivate myself. I realised that most students go through curriculum-related students and only some are able to use the assignments as a circumvent and flourish in their journeys. I wish to be a part of the Awards Committee because I have a knack for doing justice for students who have been able to turn their journeys around in order to enjoy success. I have always been result-oriented, however, my main ducks has always been on the holistic outcome of every task. I promise to serve the community well and will make sure that students, who are awarded, feel empowered through York’s prestigious awards and accolades.

Recently, I had been searching for volunteer opportunities on campus for the upcoming Fall/Winter term. When I learned that the Faculty of Graduate Studies was seeking volunteers for positions on the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council and its Standing Committees, I immediately knew that this was an opportunity I did not want to miss out on. It has been my goal for some time now to volunteer in a capacity that allows me to contribute to the decision-making process. Throughout my career, I have held various positions in different settings and have made decisions on my own regarding a variety of issues. As a result of these experiences, I have developed skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication that help me make informed decisions in everyday life. With the skills and knowledge I possess, I am confident that I will be able to perform my duties effectively and efficiently if given this opportunity. I am looking forward to this volunteer opportunity at The Faculty of Graduate Studies Council (FGSC) as it will allow me not only to enhance my existing skills but to hone them further, which I am certain will prove greatly beneficial both academically and professionally in the long run.

My name is Ransford Tei, a first-year History Ph.D. student. As a professional teacher and a historian, I have a strong background in mentoring and teaching high school students on some selected topics in History. Throughout my professional career, I served on a number of student committees, including the Liaison Committee, Orientation and Integration Committee, and Student Inter-religious Committee. These positions exposed me to understanding issues pertaining to youth advocacy and governance and issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity. Therefore, serving on a Standing Committee will give me the opportunity to hone my leadership skills.

My contributions spread to many fields, as I passionately dedicated my life to helping those in need. I am a certified Mediator, a legal support advocate, and a founder of "Women of Courage and Strength," a support group for abused women. I am creative, energetic, and tenacious. Five years ago, I decided to return to school as a mature student. I worked hard to achieve my goal, and after completing a double major BA and certification with honours, I decided to continue to Graduate school. York University gave me so much more than I could have ever imagined, and I am grateful to everyone who crossed my path because each encounter brought joy and enriched my life. As a corporate and legal professional, I am excited to express my strong interest in serving on the Standing Committee of the Faculty Council. With over 15 years of experience in corporate law, education, entrepreneurship, and research, I bring a diverse perspective to this role.
Throughout my career, I have actively contributed to the development of law students in my home country and conducted scholarly research on contemporary legal and corporate issues. I am particularly dedicated to supporting indigent and aspiring youth interested in the law profession.

My academic journey includes completing my undergraduate degree in Sociology at Queen's University, which provided invaluable insights into humanity and has fueled my desire to make a positive impact.
Aspiring to be a part of the petition committee, I see this as an opportunity to channel my dedication and contribute significantly to the school. I am interested in serving on a Standing Committee, and the Petitions Committee or the Appeals & Academic Honesty Committee, in particular, as I would be grateful for the opportunity to offer insight into how the lived experiences of students have impacted their academic journeys. I am deeply passionate about academic honesty, and promoting ways to continue prioritizing its importance to students. Beyond this, I would be happy to contribute ideas around how the university could further support its students in navigating the world of post-secondary education, a critical period of their lives. As an incoming PhD student in the Communication & Culture program, I currently serve as the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) Representative on the Communication & Culture Graduate Students’ Association, where I communicate information about university-wide operations to my colleagues during monthly meetings. In addition, my previous volunteer and work experience are situated in the realm of education and health: two areas of great importance to me. I have been a dedicated, full-time student with York University since 2012. I strive to uphold the university’s values and mission for academic excellence through my pursuit of a Master of Science in Biology. I have proudly earned two undergraduate degrees at York University: a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Psychology where I convocated as a Member of Dean's Honour Roll, and a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Biology where I convocated with First Class with Distinction. From 2022-2023, I was involved in the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee as a member of the Science Student Caucus in the Faculty of Science Council. As a Committee Student Member, I participated in Committee meetings to address, discuss, and review undergraduate curricular initiatives. I advocated for the interests of science students in Council meetings by voting on academic matters concerning the Faculty of Science. As a lifelong learner who has spent over ten years at the university, I am highly cognizant of the ongoing challenges and barriers that our students face every day which impede on their academic and professional journeys, and overall success. I value the integrity of the Petitions Committee in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council, to engage in equitable discussions and make informed decisions for students seeking accommodations. I strive to take part in the overarching goal and responsibility of the Council to advocate for the advancement and development of our students, with their academic success as our upmost priority, to ensure that such challenges and barriers may be overcome.

By way of an introduction, I am a post graduate student at Osgoode Hall Law School pursuing my masters programme in Canadian Common Law. I have a vast experience of practicing law for over 3 years and have spent more time litigating in the High Court of Delhi and the Supreme Court of India practicing commercial law. Owing to my commercial law background, I developed a keen interest in regulatory mapping and research and thereafter joined Ernst & Young's law department for the same before joining this masters program. Growing up - I always had an interest in serving in committees where I could work directly with people who are aggrieved. Hence, having an experience of holding various administrative positions from high school to law school and the experience of practicing law; could be of great help in adjudicating cases and formal hearings through the Appeals and Academic Honesty Committee.
