Big Data & Data Analytics

This new stream was launched in 2019 to support IEPs who want to pursue a career in the field of modern data analytics and artificial intelligence.  The program includes courses introducing participants to database systems and data analytics as well as advanced courses in data mining, warehousing and a newly created course in  applied artificial intelligence.

Specialized Courses

An introduction to fundamentals of data warehousing and business intelligence. Topics include data warehouse planning; data pre-processing, multi-dimensional models, business analytics modelling, design, and implementation. In particular, the role of data warehouse in supporting business intelligence and effective decision making is emphasized through projects and case studies.

Web mining is the application of data mining techniques to discover useful information from the Web. This course provides an overview of relevant techniques from data mining and information retrieval and their applications in e-commerce and Web information systems. Prerequisites: AP/ITEC 1000 3.00, AP/ITEC 1010 3.00, AP/ITEC 1620 3.00, AP/ITEC 2610 3.00, AP/ITEC 2620 3.00, SC/MATH 1190 3.00, SC/MATH 2320 3.00, SC/ MATH 2565 3.00 , AP/ITEC 3220 3.00, AP/ITEC 3230 3.00, AP/ITEC 4020 3.00.

A brief survey to the theory and development of artificial intelligence (AI) leading to current models of application and deployment. Full hands-on training with one example of a commercial AI service platform. A large project assignment will provide course participants with an opportunity to build an AI-based application. Prerequisites: ITEC 3040 3.00 Open to: IEP students, other students who meet pre-requisites

Elective Courses

IT students must have taken a total of 6 credits (i.e. 2 courses) as electives subject to the following conditions. The following stream specific courses must be taken before your specialized courses as your electives if they were not waived in your pre-requisite waiver form:

  • AP/ITEC 3040 Introduction to Data Analytics (3.0) 
  • AP/ITEC 3220 Using and Designing Database Systems (3.0)

If you are not required to take the above electives, then you must take 6.00 credits as electives, according to the following guideline:

  • Any undergraduate 3.0 credit course from AP/ADMS, AP/ITEC or SC/CSE.  
  • At least one 3.0 credit course that must be at a 3000/4000 level selected from the courses listed below (or an equivalent course-subject to the pre-approval of the School of ITEC) unless a prerequisite is required.
