Rules for Candidates

Election Rules

  1. Any candidate who wished to withdraw must do so by emailing the CRO no later than noon of the first day of campaigning.
  2. Posters may be posted around campus and must adhere to the following guidelines:
    • Posters posted in BETHUNE COLLEGE may ONLY be posted on Bulletin Boards and nowhere else.
    • Elsewhere, posters may only be posted on cement or brick walls, on Posting Boards.
    • Posters MAY NOT be posted on any drywall or glass surfaces.
    • Posters MAY NOT be posted in the Bethune College Council Office space.
    • Candidates may not utilize any Bethune College Council or Bethune Head's Office materials.
    • Failure to follow the aforementioned will result in penalization as deemed by the Bethune College Council and CRO.
    • Posters deemed tasteless or degrading to other candidates will result in a penalization as deemed by the Bethune College Council and CRO.
    • Posters being ripped down or defaced by another candidate will result in a disqualification from the election process.
    • If any candidate finds a poster infraction (whether it be on their own poster or another candidates) had a duty to inform the CRO of such infraction. A candidate may take a picture and email it, along with the infraction site to the CRO.
    • Posters must be taken down on the last day of voting. Failure to do so may result in a penalization as deemed by the Bethune College Council and CRO.
    • Slates and parties are not present on posters.
  3. Campaigning methods that utilize online content (i.e. social media, email, etc.) must adhere to the following guidelines:
    • Facebook Groups/Events may be utilized but must be created after the All Candidates Information meeting.
    • Posts deemed degrading or harmful toward other candidates or toward the BCC will result in a penalization as deemed by the Bethune College Council and CRO.
    • Posts deemed degrading or harmful by students affiliated with a candidate toward another candidate or toward the BCC will result in a penalization as deemed by the Bethune College Council and CRO.
    • The use of emails sent out using York sanctioned, Bethune registered, or CNS registered listserv is strictly prohibited. Failure to comply will result in a disqualification from the election process.
    • Posts may not be posted in Bethune affiliates Facebook groups. This includes the following groups and groups affiliated with: Bethune Athletics, Bethune College Council, Bethune Dragon Week and Bethune Residence. Failure to comply will result in a penalization as deemed by the Bethune College Council and CRO.
    • Posts may not be posted from any Bethune affiliated Twitter accounts unless is it a general tweet about the elections as a whole. This includes the following twitter handles: @BethuneCollege, @DragonWeek20, @BethuneAthletes as well as any other Bethune-affiliated accounts. Failure to comply with result in a penalization as deemed by the Bethune College Council and CRO.
    • Slates and parties are strictly banned.
  4. Class announcements are permitted; however, you must have approval or speak in front of a class by the professor beforehand to make such announcements.
  5. Candidates cannot pass around their own laptop/tablet/phone to another person to vote.
  6. Failure to abide by the aforementioned rules or concerns made by the CRO during the nomination period, campaigning period, and voting period will result in a penalization or disqualification of the candidate as deemed by the Bethune College Council and CRO.

Additional Information

Campaigning:

  1. You will be added to an all candidates Facebook Group where information and updates will be posted. You may also use this group for questions you may have about election.

Infractions:

  1. Complaints of possible infractions of these rules must be brought to the attention of the CRO and evidence must be presented.
  2. All complaints must be reported by the last day of the voting period.
  3. The CRO will decide on all complaints and may choose to give a warning or other penalty. The decision can be appealed to BCC.

Debate Information:

  1. Candidates running for the following positions (President, Executive Vice-President, Vice-President Communication, Vice-President Athletics) will prepare a 1-minute speech for the candidates’ debate and will be asked 2-3 questions upon completion of their speech by either the CRO of the audience.
  2. Candidates running for the following positions (GeneralMembers, FirstYearRepresentative) will be asked 2-3 questions regarding their position by either the CRO or the audience.
