Welcome

The Bethune Writing Centre will reopen for appointments Monday September 16th, 2024.

Appointments will be offered on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. Saturday appointments will be available in October and November. Check out the Fall 2024 Schedule below for more information. And Click the BOOK AN APPOINTMENT to go to the Writing Centre eClass that has all available appointments.

Hello! My name is Kathryn and I’m the Instructor at the Bethune Writing Centre. My goal is to help you improve your academic writing by expressing your ideas and knowledge clearly and in your own voice.  I encourage you to make an appointment at any stage of your writing process. Whether you’re at the beginning and figuring out the instructions, in the middle and would like a second opinion on what you’ve written so far, or finalizing an assignment before submitting, I’m here to learn more about what you are working on and how I can help you.

The Writing Centre is here to help you navigate the different kinds of academic and professional writing that you will encounter over your university experience. This includes talking about the different skills that you will need to be successful in your writing practice.

Please note that these appointment slots are for students who are from the Faculty of Science or Lassonde School of Engineering or who are currently taking a Lassonde, Science or Bethune course. Students who are not enrolled in Science, Lassonde or Bethune College-affiliated courses will have their bookings cancelled.

The Bethune Writing Centre can help you with the following:

  • Review your work and learn to self-edit
  • Write a critical argument and/or thesis for assignments
  • Organize the structure of scientific reports and essays
  • Reference and write citations
  • Learning strategies and effective work habits
  • Personal statements and applications

New this year, we are offering drop-in writing appointments at Steacie Library. Find us in Study Room A on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 2:30.

Guidelines for drop-ins:

Drop-in appointments are 10-minutes maximum. These short meetings with the Writing Instructor are ideal for asking 1-2 short questions.

You will be seen on a “first come, first served” basis. Please be aware of others who are waiting and be respectful as you wait for your turn.

Please keep in mind that the Writing Instructor will likely be working with someone when you arrive. If you have any questions, please do your best to wait until your turn or until there is a suitable break between other appointments.

One (1) drop-in per day is allowed. If you need more time with the Instructor to talk about and/or review your work, please book a 50-minute appointment (the full schedule is available on the Bethune Writing Centre eClass).

  • Appointments are 50 minutes.
  • A maximum of 3 appointments can be booked at a time.
  • 1 appointment per day is permitted. If you book multiple appointments on one day, only the first appointment will be kept (subsequent bookings will be cancelled).
  • You will receive a reminder email the morning of your appointment.
  • If you would like to request an alternate day/time to book an appointment, please contact Kathryn Allyn: travis10@yorku.ca.

Changes to Appointments:

  • Appointments can be booked up to 1 hour before the scheduled time.
  • You can change or cancel your appointment up to 1 hour before your appointment time. After this point, please contact the Writing Instructor to make changes.

  • Please ensure that your document and any supporting materials are available to work on together. We can work on a hard copy or please bring a device/laptop to work digitally.
