Peer Mentoring

The Peer Mentoring program is designed to assist first-year students in making a successful transition to university life. All incoming first-year Bethune students are matched with a peer mentor before September classes start. The mentors are successful upper-year students who are trained as peer mentors. These mentors are in the same program as the incoming student, and are available to answer questions, give advice, and help incoming students adapt to university life.

Peer Mentor Program Goals


A Bethune College peer-based mentoring service to assist first-year students in making a successful transition to university life.  Peer Mentors foster positive individual growth as well as a welcoming integration into the York University community. Peer Mentors also provide peer advising to students in all years, and organize public seminars throughout the year.


  • Ease the transition of incoming first year students to all aspects of university life
  • Empower students to optimally utilize all the services and resources offered by Bethune College and York University to improve academic, social, and personal aspects of student life in present and future endeavours.
  • Develop effective mentoring capacity through collaborative interaction between Peer Mentors and mentees.
  • Provide Peer Mentors with a unique opportunity to develop interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills in a leadership position.

Senior Indigenous Peer Mentor

For Indigenous students, in addition to your regular peer mentor (above), Bethune also has an in-house Indigenous peer mentor, Ayicia Nabigon. Ayicia is an alumna of the Faculty of Science and Bethune College, from Biigitgong Nishnaabeg, ON, a small Anishnaabe reserve with a population of just over 400.  She is available to chat with you any time and is here to help foster connections and community among our Indigenous students.  If you are an Indigenous student in the Faculty of Science or Lassonde School of Engineering, and you’d like to connect with Ayicia, please email
