Overview

The Marcia H. Rioux Award in Critical Disability Studies, Human Rights and Social Justice will be awarded annually to a doctoral student in Critical Disability Studies for excellence in the areas of critical disability studies, human rights and social justice.  Applicants must be registered as a full-time doctoral student and have completed at least one year of study, demonstrate financial need and have strong academic standing (minimum A average).  Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received support from this award and who demonstrate an international perspective and experience.

This annual award was created by the Critical Disability Studies Program at York University to honour one of our founding members (and emeritus Professor) Marcia Rioux.  Professor Rioux is a legal scholar who has helped to transform the field of disability studies through her extensive international community-based work on employment and disability rights monitoring.  Professor Rioux brought her community and legal expertise to the establishment in 2003 of the Critical Disability Studies (CDS) Program in the School of Health Policy and Management at York University.  CDS is one of only two standalone graduate programs of its kind in Canada and since 2007, the only one to have a PhD program.  She also was the founding Chair of the School of Health Policy and Management.  Professor Rioux is a distinguished Research Professor Scholar and was made a member of the Order of Canada in 2014.
