Criminalization of Poverty
The course examines the policies, practices, and techniques by which the criminalization of poverty occurs. Using a critical interdisciplinary lens, students will examine how historical and contemporary narratives have constructed poor people as “criminal” thereby justifying their surveillance, regulation, and punishment. In so doing, students will develop an understanding of the intersecting power relations shaping the criminalization of poverty.
