Vernon Oliver Stong Graduate Scholarships in Science

Overview

The scholarship is available to students studying in the field of science (excluding engineering) in the Faculty of Graduate Studies who have achieved a minimum grade point average of B+. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons and be Ontario residents who demonstrate financial need. The applicants to the Vernon Oliver Stong Graduate Scholarship in Science must demonstrate financial need and these scholarships will be awarded primarily on the basis of research excellence and academic performance.

  • $10,000

Eligibility

  • Full-time registered graduate student in the Faculty of Science
  • Must be either in Year 1 of Masters or Year 1 of Doctoral studies at the time of application. Incoming students are also welcome to apply.
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons and be Ontario residents*
  • Minimum grade point average of B+ over the last two academic years

Deadline

  • Student deadline: April 30, 2026

Award Period (when the award will be paid)

  • Three equal installments will be issued during the Fall, Winter and Summer term

How to Apply

  • Applicants for admission must be nominated by their graduate program.
  • Must be either in Year 1 of Masters or Year 1 of Doctoral studies at the time of application. Incoming students are also welcome to apply. Current undergraduate students entering a master’s program, or master’s students entering a PhD program, should contact their proposed graduate program to request a nomination. 
  • Personal statement indicating your career vision and research direction (500 words)
  • Transcripts and updated copy of the applicant’s CV.
  • Two supporting letters, one from the student's supervisor and one from another
  • professor (second letter may be from York or elsewhere)
  • Students are required to complete a student financial profile in FAAS before March 31, 2026.

Allocation Process

  • After the Department’s Adjudication Committee determines the recipients, the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Science will post the allocation to the successful student’s account.
