Become a Bethune Peer Mentor! (May 2026 - April 2027)

Bethune College Peer Mentors are assigned a group of Mentees who are entering their first semester at York University. Mentees could be coming from high school, transferring from another post-secondary institution, returning to studies as a mature student, or coming from another country.

Supporting Your Mentees

Peer Mentors start working with their mentees in the summer as soon as their mentees have enrolled in classes. New student enrollment runs from May to September.

Peer Mentors support their group of Mentees throughout the students' first year (from new student enrollment to end of Winter term) through the following means (including, but not limited to):

  • Coordinating and facilitating meet-ups with their mentee groups
  • Introducing mentees to campus services
  • Attending campus workshops or events with their mentees
  • Answering questions and triaging mentees to relevant supports
  • Communicating regularly with their mentees over Teams
  • Making them feel welcome at YorkU!

Supporting New Student Transition & Orientation

  • Peer Mentors are expected to be present for the Faculty of Science Fall Academic Orientation Day - September 3, 2026
  • Peer Mentors support new students at organized orientation tours, workshops, events, and more! New students join YorkU each semester (Summer, Fall, Winter)

Training, Professional Development, and Support

Bethune College Peer Mentors are current undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science and Lassonde School of Engineering. Peer Mentors must have studied for at least one semester at York University at the time of their application.

If you have had positive experiences at York and would like to help shape the experience of our new students and assist with their transition to university life, then this is the role for you!

It's a great way to get involved, meet new people, and to build skills!

Peer Mentors will receive ongoing professional development and support through BC 3000 0.0 Introduction to Peer Leadership.

Become a Bethune Peer Tutor! (September 2026 - April 2027)

Peer Tutors are pivotal members of our volunteer team; they have passed their courses with excelling marks, and they are ready to share their effective study techniques and knowledge with their peers. The Peer Tutoring program is dedicated to helping students overcome their academic challenges in select science and engineering courses, by providing  free one-on-one tutoring sessions!

Bethune College Peer Tutors are passionate undergraduate volunteers that are responsible for providing free one-on-one academic support in select science and/or engineering courses.  

This program is entirely student-led and built with the academic success of our student community in mind. Sometimes the best person that can help tackle an academic challenge is someone who was sitting in that same seat last semester, or someone who has overcome that exact challenge not long ago. 

Peer Tutors are expected to:  

  • Allocate a minimum of three (3) hours a week to the Peer Tutoring program. 
    (The three hours may include but is not limited to: in-person and virtual sessions, as well as administrative follow-up and check-ins. 
  • Communicate promptly and efficiently with the Peer Tutoring Program Coordinator, and/or Student Success Coordinator 
  • Check the program MS Teams site frequently to ensure you are notified of any updates to the program 
  • Check the Tutoring Request Forum regularly to help with virtual tutoring sessions. 
  • Attend and complete the mandatory training sessions prior to starting your role. 

Peer Tutors must uphold Bethune College and York University’s highest standards. 

Peer Tutors are representative of Bethune College and York University as a whole, therefore it is important that they are: 

  • Knowledgeable in their chosen subject, and exhibit academic excellence 
  • Professional and approachable 
  • Committed to the highest standards of inclusivity and equity  

Applications are now open to current undergraduate students affiliated with Bethune College (Faculty of Science and/or Lassonde School of Engineering). We encourage all second-year and above students who have earned a letter grade of [A] or higher in any 1000- or 2000-level science or engineering course to apply!

This role is a great way to join our volunteer team, expand your network within Bethune College, and build your resume. It is also a great opportunity to sharpen your current skills and valuable new experience in communication, teaching, and leadership, all while helping the student community. 

Become a Bethune Ambassador! (August 2026 - April 2027)

Bethune Ambassadors are student leaders and front-line representatives of Bethune College at York University. They are the "face" of Bethune College and help connect Bethune-affiliated students with relevant college and campus resources.  

The roles and responsibilities are as follows: 

Office Hours 

  • Attend at least two office hour slots per week and be physically present at the Bethune College information kiosk.  
  • Have clear and efficient communication with the BA Coordinator(s) regarding any absences at least 24 hours in advance.  
  • Greet students and guests in a professional and welcoming manner - answering their questions, directing them to building/rooms, and warmly referring them to appropriate campus and college resources.  
  • Support students in accessing academic, wellness, accessibility, financial, and campus support services. 

Class Announcements 

  • Conduct in-class announcements that encourage the availability of Bethune and PASS services.  
  • Serve as a liaison between students and instructors, communicating questions, concerns, and feedback.  
  • Act as a positive representative of Bethune College and foster an inclusive learning environment.  

Social Events  

  • Staff the Bethune College information kiosk and support BC 208 staff during Academic Orientation Day (AOD) and other social events. 
  • Maintain an approachable presence at Bethune College for events and activities.  
  • Assist with the coordination of alumni panels and social events hosted by Bethune College.  

Media Marketing 

  • Support the Media Assistant with the creation of social media content. 
  • Represent Bethune College on social media by capturing photos and sharing event highlights.

Bethune Ambassadors are current undergraduate students who are affiliated with Bethune College.

Applications to become a Bethune Ambassador open on Friday, June 19th and close on Friday, July 3rd.  

Selected applicants will then be invited to participate in an interview process. 

As a Bethune Ambassador, you’ll gain leadership, communication and networking skills, while also making a meaningful contribution to the Bethune College community. It’s a great opportunity to connect with students, staff, faculty, and alumni across the university.
