Bethune College hosts the Class Representative Program for all first- and second-year courses in the Faculty of Science.
Class Representatives strengthen the ties between students and course directors/instructors by fostering communication. They connect with the course instructor as needed, organize study groups, and make regular in-class announcements on behalf of Bethune College regarding workshops, seminars and social events. This helps students feel more engaged and perform better in their courses. We have found that this role is a low-risk, low-stakes way to encourage first-year students to get involved and develop leadership skills – many Class Representatives become invaluable senior peer leaders in their future years.
Bethune College recruits class representatives at the start of each term and provides extensive training and ongoing support for their role. There is also a Class Representative Coordinator who assists with operations (bccr@yorku.ca).
The Class Representative Program works best with faculty members who are committed to the program. Thus, please let class representatives make in-class announcements and respond to communication from your assigned class representatives. If you have any concerns or questions about the Class Representative Program, please contact the Director of Academic Support Services at Bethune College.
