Criminology placement course

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to develop their knowledge of criminological issues and approaches in a practical context. The course begins with in-class workplace-related skills training followed by placement in a community- or non-governmental organization working with people in conflict with the law, victims of crime, or in crime prevention. The in-class components include professional conduct, advanced research methods, readings, workshops, and discussion in a seminar format. Placements and tasks therein will vary depending on the availability and needs of partner organizations, and students’ interview performance and specific skillsets. Placement tasks may include: researching and developing resources and referrals; knowledge translation and report writing; conducting interviews and focus groups; blog-writing, website and social media engagement; working with people coming out of incarceration; knowledge mobilization and developing public education campaigns; working with and mentoring youth with incarcerated parents. Students will be expected to work one day per week over 15 weeks for a total of approximately 120 hours in the placement.

Application required - applicants must submit a resume and cover letter and will be screened, interviewed, and selected by the course director(s). Prerequisites: AP/SOSC 1650 6.00 with a grade of at least B and earned 84 credits.
