Children’s Literature and Culture of the First World War book cover

How did girls write about the First World War? St. Nicholas Magazine, a "magazine for young folks," held contests for stories, essays, poetry, and drawings, publishing 8 pages of responses each month. This article analyzes girls' responses to war, demonstrating that they mostly rejected the domestic and passive war roles that St. Nicholas tried to impose upon them. Instead, girls created their own active textual and visual war stories.
